Maybe I wanted some assurance that I wasn't going to get kidnapped. [She'd said that too.] I'm just saying I would have done it if I had to.

[But she hadn't.]

That loyalty is mine to give. They aren't taking it from me. They could have abandoned me, and they didn't. [Her voice grows soft.] Without them, I have nothing.

[ he turns back towards her fully finally, fingers tangling through the bars again though he doesn't get any closer. ]

You'd have me. And we could have the world. Anything you can dream of.

[Her stomach flips, but she doesn't move. Her eyes flick up towards him and her lips press together again, as if she's biting her tongue. When she speaks, her voice is deadpan, as if she's trying to hide everything she feels about that statement.]

I don't think they're going to let you go any time soon.

[ he looks down again, a humorless smile on his lips ] Oh, they might let me go alright.

They might not, if you just tell them what they want to know. If you helped them instead of putting up the front that you aren't afraid.

[She's being dead serious right now.]

It wouldn't be the first time someone changed sides.

You can't really be implying you want me to join this band of merry misfits, can you?

Putting aside how very not-my-style this outfit is, you recognize most of them want my innards on a platter right now, don't you?

I didn't say that. But they might not kill you.

[That latter part is partly her fault too. She made it worse. But she was afraid they'd find out either way.]

Most of them don't want to be murderers, and you're not exactly a threat anymore. [A beat.] And I could talk to them.

Take a hard guess, Elena, at how many of your friends have already come down here and threatened some creative castration methods.

[She winces, looks away.]

They knew something was wrong. And I don't lie to them. I was hurt. I still am.

I never wanted to hurt you.

You can say that, but I can't trust it. Not anymore.

[She'd tried that, thinking that she could. And he'd burned her pretty hard.]

As nice as it would be to have that trust of yours, I'd really rather you had a healthy sense of paranoia and self-preservation, moving forward. You're going to need it.

What do you think it means? These people hired a doppelganger. What else do you think they might think of?

You know, you don't always have to answer questions with more questions. If I knew, I wouldn't have asked in the first place. If you don't know, then it doesn't matter. We're being as careful as we can be.

We know what we signed up for.

[If she dies, then at least it'll be doing something. Then the world will be rid of one more doppelganger, and only a handful of people will cry over her anyway.]

See, it's that line of thinking right there that just reinforces my point.

[He's talking like he's worried about her, like she might lose her life in the coming encounters, but that just leads her to something else that's been eating at her.]

Did you hear about my trip into the Thames when I was on my way back?

[Sense motive...crit fail. Haha she's going to believe him wholeheartedly no matter what he says to this next line of questioning y a y.]

I did. And I still haven't figured out who the hell thought that was a grand idea.

[It's a statement more than a question. She should...not feel relieved that he didn't have anything to do with it.]

It could have been one of a number of people. It's not like you're short on enemies. But whoever it was, didn't let me on in on anything - presuming it even was one of my employers.

[She mentally chews on that for a moment. It would be a hell of a coincidence for it not to be related to anything else, but she also doesn't...have it in her to dwell on it for too long.

Too much other stuff floating around in her head.

You said you were trying to protect me. To warn me. Did something happen to make you...stop trying?

[Because the idea that he's 'dealt' with it insinuates, at least to her, that he's been offended by it, and he sure doesn't seem to be that way now.]

Stop trying what? [ he glances back at her, reading either her expression or her mind, realization crossing his own features ] To convince the world I'm more than just a monster, you mean.

Mhmm. [She nods.] If you didn't care that people thought that way about you, you wouldn't be trying to 'protect' me from it.

[In other words, she thinks it's an act. Because Elena likes to think that people can be saved.

Maybe it's easier to be and do what people expect of you, but that doesn't make it right.]

Maybe I'm just trying to protect you from falling into the trap of caring what they think in the first place.

Maybe, but I think you already know it's a little late for that, too.

[She could lie and say that she doesn't care, but she's pretty sure he'd see right through her. She hid it relatively well from her teammates, way back when, but even some of them saw it.

Besides, what's the point in lying to someone who was probably reading her mind.]
