Yeah, I'll teach you. [ because she's the white girl version of lucy. ] Mandarin or Cantonese? There's fifty seven fucking others but those are the most prevalent.

We went up on the Eye and were talking about how so many people in the castle speak different languages. So I told him to pick a number between one and five and that determined which one I would learn. So here I am.

Because he picked 3. And I felt like being honest for some reason. [so much regret. why can't she be learning italian right now???]

Well, next time you won't. [ he pats her shoulder fondly, but reaches over for some scratch paper and neatly and quickly draws out a pair of characters: 你好. ] Nǐ hǎo is hello, you already know that, right? [ he draws another pair: 再见 ] This is zàijiàn. Can you guess what that means?

Uh... Goodbye? [WILD GUESS IS WILD. I also don't know this language so her ignorance is super easy to play...]

Yes. Good guess. [ he knows, but he made it simple so she could guess. ] Those are the easiest, most basic words you will need to know. But if we do this the way I was taught, a lot of it is going to be basic logic before you start learning the word. You knew it was goodbye because I started with hello, right? So after that, we can start with what comes after a hello in conversation, the how are yous, I'm fines, etc. Make sense?

[ of course, gus learned mandarin with korean already under his belt so immersion, even the lazy bullshit kind he uses, may not be the best course. but he will persevere.

[So I rolled a d20 for each word to see how many times Faye would have to repeat each word before she got it... "Hello" was 16 and "goodbye" was 14. Woof. We are on the struggle bus. She slumps in her chair.]
