It didn't... go precisely as planned. But it was still worthwhile.

What did you find? Besides a dragon.

An evil druid, who was corrupting the entire ruin, capturing people to feed a... a tree.

What kind of tree eats people?

A rather sinister one, tended by a mad druid. If he kept the tree ... satisfied, it would produce fruit that could heal - or kill.

Did you bring any of the fruit back? I mean...sucks for whoever was sacrificed but if it's just laying around...

I'm afraid not. Whatever fruit was yielded each year, he auctioned off. He offered to... to give us the crop if we would feed the tree one of our own.

[Faye's eyebrows go up.]

And you're sure none of you considered it? Not even for a second?

[Not that she would have sacrificed anyone on that team (except Belle probs. Oops) but she's just saying. It's tempting.]

Some of our number were almost inclined to sacrifice themselves - we were trying to get the apple to help Amara, after all. But none of us would allow something like that to come to pass.

There's no way to recreate the magic of the apple? Yknow- without human sacrifice.

Not without a great deal of power. That sort of magic... dark magic, tends to get stronger results more quickly, but at a much higher cost.

So you don't think it would be worth it? [Power is important to Faye, but she knows that being greedy for it isn't exactly a very common mindset. It's not "the right thing to do" or something. ]

I think being willing to pay that price exacts a toll on a person. Makes them less than what they could be.

Some might think it's worth it for that kind of power.

[Like her. Or at least she thinks that's the kind of person she is.]

Power isn't everything. Some of the most powerful people in the world are often the loneliest.

You know what they say... It's lonely at the top. [She gives a shrug.] That or 'everything comes at a price.'

I suppose it's just hard for me to understand how power could mean more to someone than happiness.

They think power will make them happy. [She knows because sometimes she feels that way. Sometimes, though? She isn't so sure.] Maybe they're right. Maybe they're wrong. But that's their choice to make, isn't it?

It is. But it doesn't only affect them.

Right. But it's easy to not give a shit about that when all you want is power.

[untethered]

Power is a means to an end. I suppose it depends on what one's ideal end is.
