[ Buffy finds her way to a window seat near the middle. She drops into it a peers out, smiling brightly. ] Check it out, flyin' in style. [ She whips her head around to look at the other passengers. ] Think there'll be an in-flight movie or something?

[bigbad]

[A few hours into the flight, Spike puts down his book and walks towards the front of the plane, staying towards the middle of the aisle where the light from the windows won't touch him. When he reaches Buffy's row, he stops and turns to face her.]

We've got to talk.

[slays]

[ Buffy glances away from where she'd been staring out the window to look up at him, glowering. She pushes the window shade all the way up so that it casts enough light on the seat beside her that Spike can't risk sitting there to corner her. Or, well, more than he already has her cornered. ] Disagree.

[bigbad]

[Oh, Buffy, you don't know Spike very well if you think that'll stop him. Still, for now at least, he just stands, though he rolls his eyes a bit at the gesture.]

Come on, love, we're working together. We can't spend the entire mission fighting each other.

[slay]

[ She slams her hand down to the arm rest and sits up, glaring more stubbornly at him. ]

I'm not gonna fight. In fact, I won't even tell the others what you are. But, you lied to me. To my face, about everything that you are. I'm not going to pretend we're friends. We never were. I'll work with you. I'll fight with you. But, I will not put up with you acting like I owe you anything.

[bigbad]

[Spike's eyes widen a bit, face slipping in dismay. He'd thought they had been friends. He'd liked her. She's the only person here he'd really bonded with. And now she hates him. It hurts, more than he'd like to admit. His voice is soft and full of emotion when he answers her.]

I never lied. I'm the same guy I've always been. I just-- [He breaks off and gestures at the window.] Would you put that down? I know you don't owe me anything. I just-- please. Let me explain.

[slay]

How can you say that? [ There's the harsh edge of genuine disbelief in her voice, offended by his ignorance to his own behavior. ] You're not even a guy at all. You're a -- [ She stops herself. Because she promised she wouldn't say anything. She swallows down her fury into a quieter look, tone calming. ] I don't want an explanation. I don't want anything except for you to leave me alone.

[bigbad]

[He leans forward, carefully avoiding the light. God, he should just accept it and go. But he hates this. He's missed her. He speaks in a hushed tone.]

Yeah, I know. I figured it out when I arrived in this bloody place and my flesh started burning. Between that and the lack of reflection, well, I figured maybe a spot of blood would be what it took to settle that hunger that just wouldn't stop no matter how much I ate. I wasn't lying about my memories, Buffy. I know what I am, but I don't... feel like one. [Or maybe he does. He doesn't know what it's supposed to feel like.]

[slay]

I can't -- [ She holds up her hands in a defensive gesture. The explanation only disgusts her more. ] I can't hear this. [ She promptly unbuckles her seatbelt and gets to her feet only to shove past him towards the back. God, was there anywhere on this plane that he couldn't corner her? ]

[bigbad]

[And Spike honestly might have let her go then, if she weren't headed towards his little shadowy corner. He doesn't... actually have anywhere else to go. Which is a pretty convenient excuse, really. So he follows her.]

What can I do to make it right?

[slay]

[ She grinds her heels to a halt, wheeling around to face him. ] How about getting a clue? There's nothing to make right. Every word out of your mouth, everything that I thought I knew about you has been a lie, Spike. [ A beat. She shook her head, lip curling in a sneer. ] I don't know you. And, I don't want to.

[bigbad]

[He shakes his head, looking away to try and hide how much it hurts.] What did you expect? Me to go up to you and just slide it in with my name? I would have told you eventually.

[slay]

Don't give me that. You had plenty of chances. You could have told me anytime, but instead you hid it. You would rather lie to me. [ She drops her hands out to her side, shaking her head, attitude taking a turn for the mock-casual. ] No surprise. I'm sure that's just in your nature. A long with a whole lot else that I want no part of.

[rationalizes]

[Gar looks up at the question, casting a friendly smile back Buffy's way] If you'd like one. There is a screen installed. I hardly think anyone would mind, as long as Kat's finished studying her spells.

[slay]

... Kat studies spells? You mean, she doesn't just ... [ There's a brief punching gesture. Look, Kat was the embodiment of all things violent. There was solidarity happening. ]

[rationalizes]

Solve every problem with an application of violence? [It's said with cheerful teasing, obviously well-intentioned given her smile] She's a mage, actually - it's just never really put a damper on her ... combative spirit.

[slays]

I never woulda guessed. [ That explains why she's Myri's knight. She glances over at Kat, thoughtful, then looks back at Gar. ] So, the spells she's studying -- are they for the mission?

[rationalizes]

Well, they might be, depending on what we actually get done when we arrive today.

Spells actually take a great deal of time to cast. So in order to have them ready to go at a moment's notice, she must take the time to begin every spell she might want at her command for the next day or so, but leave off the last step that would complete the casting. That way, when a situation arises that calls for the spell, all the complicated magic will already be completed and she can simply say a trigger word or make a gesture that will cast the pre-prepared magic.

It's of course very difficult for a mage to suspend that much half-finished magic at any time, so younger mages can only manage to juggle a few. So she has to think ahead every day to what kind of spells she might wish to use in the next twenty four hours or so and prepare only those. [You asked for a lecture on this, didn't you?]

[slays]

[ Oh. That was ... a lot of talking. She blinks as she swallows the great big pill of information and slowly nods. Okay, processing. ] So, how's she decide? I mean, Wynn said there was no way of knowing what you'd need us to do.

She'll try to cover a wide range of possibilities: some spells for combat, or defense, but most likely those with general usefulness, such as a Light spell or... or Mage Hand which duplicates the effects of very minor telekinesis or...

[shootfirst]

[Welp, Kat's listen check makes it clear she's overheard at least part of this. She loudly interjects with:]

Fast Food spell. Never leave home without it.

[slay]

There's a spell for that?

[shootfirst]

Well, hey, a big part of magic is convenience - no reason it can't develop with the times.

[slay]

Yeah, but you'd think it would develop with something tastier. Like a feast spell. Or a just like mom used to make spell.

Well, yeah, I mean there are those things too. But they take a... better handle on the whole magical food conjuration thing.
