[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of the first half of the month. Because not everyone is into parties, ok.

They had to come back to the castle to find out where she’d been teleported from the facility. As far as any of them could tell, she just vanished.

[ That’s a lot of ‘they’ language that absolves Emma of something with no real explanation as to why. Because she doesn’t actually want to absolve herself of anything, she corrects it with a guilty look. They had prioritized getting Emma back to the castle over finding Faye. She’s here in the flesh, and Faye’s not. It sits wrong with her, and it will never stop sitting wrong with her. ]

And they needed to wake me up.

[ Wake up seems like the best way of putting it. ]

The same machine that sent Faye to Cuba and fast-forwarded all of us turned me to stone.

[ no, stop, she doesn't want to know this. she takes a step back, like the distance will create a physical barrier between her and the knowledge she doesn't want. hematite, perhaps sensing lila's distress, meows plaintively and in an automatic reaction, lila's hand moves out to pet the still invisible cat. which is fine, because the cat just butts her head against lila's outstretched palm when it's close enough.

What do you mean, turned to stone?

Pretty much what it says on the package.

[ Emma’s shoulders hunch, struggling against the guilt that weighs them down. Whether Lila wanted to know it or not, Emma’s trying this lead by example thing: leaving it out would still be lying. If she wants trust and honesty from Lila, she’s gotta give it as good as she gets. ]

A spell backfired. Probably the same thing that sent Faye to Cuba.

[ Stepping forward, she tries to raise a hand to reach for Lila’s arm. ]

I’m fine. And she will be too, they just need a day.

[ more surprising than the hug, lila let's emma comfort her. she swallows past the lump in her throat as the spell on hematite wears off and faye's small familiar slips back into sight, her paws wrapped around lila's wrist, chewing on one of the charms on her bracelet. she doesn't seem to notice, focus solely on emma. ]

Why can't we just go pick her up? [ because cuba is huge, dumbass. her usually logical and pragmatic brain completely shuts down when it comes to faye. ]

[ Squeezing Lila’s arm with both understanding and reassurance, Emma sighs softly. ]

Because it’d take just as long to get to Cuba and find her as it would for Hasmed to prepare the spell to teleport her back. A flight from London’s fourteen hours, and that’s just to Havana. Let alone renting a car and driving around to wherever the hell Solace found her.

[ Which makes it readily apparent that the thought occurred to Emma, too. Enough to look into it. ]

He brought me back; he'll get her back too.

[ she huffs, lips pursing in agitation. ] Hasmed has been telling me you guys were alright for two months. [ she didn't trust him to begin with. eric warning her that he wouldn't hesitate to abuse her curse work, no matter the blowback, has stuck with her months and months later. not to mention his impotency to help amara. this experience is not going to make her trust him any more. she would 100% rather fly there and find faye herself. she knows she is capable of it and she knows she won't brush it off as an acceptable loss.

trust issues for $500, alex. let's make it a true daily double.

but because it is emma asking her to basically trust and believe she doesn't protest any further. ]

And he never had any reason to believe we weren’t.

[ Though now that Lila points it out, Emma’s tried and true trust issues are … definitely rumbling to life. The fact that he was pressed with worry and ignored it? That sits oddly. Still, she keeps a determined, certain countenance for Lila’s benefit. ]

We were planning to go off the radar until we found out what was making that town tick, hoping we could use it for Amara. It was always gonna be a long-term assignment.

[ And yet. ]

If she’s not back by noon tomorrow, I’ll charter a flight for the two of us.

[ well, he ignored a distrustful teenager. hook had probably dealt with it better, if his reassurances to lila had been any indication. she nods slowly, distress still in her eyes even as she forces her features into a more neutral expression. she can wait until noon. doubtful she will sleep during this waiting, especially considering how horrible her sleep has been lately. but she can wait. ]

Okay. [ she glances down and away, focusing on the cat still trying to eat her mitten charm. ] Soon, kotenok.

[ Finally, Emma’s gaze drops to the cat, and she reaches out to rub her palm over its head, between the ears. A smile flickers across her face and she just nods. Noon. That’s less than 24 hours. She has to have faith in Faye that she’ll pull through whatever’s going on in Cuba until they have the chance to pull her back. ]

What'd I miss? You said two months, right?

You might want to... sit down. [ because a lot of shit when down in those two months and lila is an obsessive gossip whore so she is in the fucking know. ]

[ Oh boy. Emma's hand pulls back from the cat and she looks down at the study table Lila had conquered. Better now than later, she supposes. She moves to take a seat, pulling out the chair and dropping into it. ]

Both. [ where to start... hmm. ] First, some dude took over Russia. That happened. Made a whole speech, very dramatic. Someone made it into a pretty hilarious vine. This is the least dramatic thing that happened. [ which is saying something, frankly. ]

Um, the doppelgänger in the dungeon? He was let out. By Elena. Wynn said they're going to Andres Isle because Elena wants Kyp to be able to redeem himself or something before he gets executed. She got away, though, so no one knows where they are and, hilariously, they have Rose Hathaway on the case like she even has enough brain cells to find someone who doesn't want to be found. [ her lips purse slightly because she is on team elena, monsters unite, and it's annoying to listen to people still gossiping about her. also because rose brings out the snide eyerolling in her. ] Round about the same time there was a mass suicide in New York. Hundreds of people just walked into the Hudson and drowned themselves. Specifically Shadowkind. [ another face. ]

Sir Luthir died, same night, doing something else, apparently. There was a funeral last month. [ lila didn't go because while she has a healthy respect for ceremony, funerals are not her thing. ]

Oh and I can.. [ she wiggles her fingers and murmurs something under her breath, casting mirror image. that's right, loki, this teenager can do it, too. three duplicate copies of lila shimmering to life next to her, all wearing the same awkward, almost sheepish expression. yep. lila has magic now. sur...prise? ]

[ Emma does some quick mental math while Lila talks her through the past few months.

She’d heard about the doppelgänger, but she didn’t know to connect it to anyone named Elena. That’s new. Rose is the one who punched Faye, who is now hunting after Elena? Sure. Mass suicide. Luthir …

Her face falls. ]

The elf who did weapons qualification? [ They hadn’t exactly bonded, but it’s still a guy she knew. Not good. Mass suicide is, of course, worse, but she’ll find more out from news articles later than she will from gossip. Even gossip with Lila. Before she can further pursue the question, Lila has made

multiple copies of herself.

Emma jumps to her feet. ] Jesus.

[ Turns out her faint discomfort with magic is more considerable than anticipated. That happens when spells backfire and turn you to stone so you can get decapitated. ]

Yeah, that was pretty much my reaction, too.

[ her head tips to the side a moment, curious, and all the copies mimic her a moment until she flutters her eyelashes and they disperse, fading from sight so only one lila remains. ] Helen says the veil did something to me, unlocked some latent abilities I have. [ shruuuuuuuug. ] So I figured I end the "and that's what you missed on glee" with a high note instead of a funeral.

[ At least now she knows which one to talk to. Her attention fixes back on the real Lila. ]

Helen—she’s with the Dragon’s Hoard, right?

Yeah. She does like... Shadowkind research or whatever. Science.

[ which is why lila likes her. science is gr8.

ALSO I TOTALLY MEANT THREE MONTHS, I FORGOT A WHOLE MONTH IDEK WHEN MY OWN CHARACTER GOT MARRIED JFC. so yeah, lila said three months. ignore the two. lila is not as dumb as i am. ]

What made you decide to go to her instead of someone in the Dragon's Fire wing?

[ probably that faye and emma were gone, but she's asking anyway. ]

Because my dream work isn't magic. And my abilities manifested similar to what I know about psions. [ she flicks her wrist and a book flies off a shelf and into her hand. (mage hand + reflex save 25) another flick of her wrist and the door to one of the study rooms slams shut. (open/close -- she actually knows the difference now, it's super.) she seems incredibly at ease with what she can do, the same ease with which she uses her dream work. ] So I decided to go science instead of magic.

[ a beat. ] And you were gone. [ though to be fair, because emma is under gold and hasmed... she and faye still wouldn't have been lila's first choice. which is why she went to zero afterward. but she would have at least gone to emma when she came to terms with it months and months after it manifested. ]

I’m sorry.

[ She doesn’t qualify it with anything—can’t bring herself to, because she’d done to Lila precisely what she’d done to Henry. Precisely what her parents had done to her. Even if it wasn’t on purpose, it was abandonment. Lila needed someone, and she wasn’t there. ]

Don't. [ she shakes her head sharply. ] If I let you blame yourself then I'll blame you, too. And I'm sick of being angry, it's exhausting and I'm already exhausted.

[ Hesitating for a moment, Emma lingers on her feet. Then she nods, a flicker of a smile making its way to her mouth. In all the crushing blow of bad news, she still manages that—after all. This is better than the note she’d left on. Slowly, she lowers herself back to her seat. ]

What happened to Luthir?

No clue. People are surprisingly mum on it. But he was in New York with his brand new bride and Wynn was pretty... hold on. [ pulling her phone out, she rolls back through her saved messages to find the video message from wynn. it doesn't take her long because... she doesn't have a lot of messages from wynn. she holds the phone out for emma to take. ] That's what he told us.

[ Emma grabs the phone. She really needs to get hers replaced. Reading now. ]

Dark forces. [ She scoffs at the vagueness. ] What the hell does that mean?

No clue. But from my copious eavesdropping, word is that the creepy Church of the Lord's Humanity might have had something to do with the mass suicide. They were at the Shadowkind conference we went to and there was some skeevy shit going on. [ she was kind of disappointed they hadn't gone to that specific talk, but she would have missed her spanish harlem angel so... oh well. it does mean, however, that her knowledge is regrettably second hand and paltry. ] If you can't tell by the name, they aren't exactly fans of Shadowkind. Any of them. Including us, though we may get a pass for being passably human.
