That's the one. [he's just gonna ... take a seat. it might be awhile. /plays how do you solve a problem like maria] It's just ... a difficult situation. He has these flashes of brilliant competence when we're on missions, and then the rest of the time ... I guess you'd call him a loose cannon. He's been with me and the rest of our team for so long, and it's not like he's been useless. I feel like there has to be a place for him here. But I don't know where that place would be. Or if he'll ever truly be ready.

[ koraith hooks his big hands behind his back, pacing behind his desk as he listens And what, by your estimation, will it mean for him to be 'ready'?

I'm not sure. He's the only squire I've ever had. And Hasmed and I never really discussed anything. He read my mission reports and asked if I'd like to be knighted, essentially. I felt like I would know when the time is right, but I have no idea.

It sounds to me as if there's something you're hoping to see from him yet. Perhaps I can help you discern what that is.

[he props his chin against the palm of his hand while he contemplates this further.] I guess ... I think I was expecting him to mellow out over time. Gain some sense of purpose. Be less ... unpredictable.

Do you think predictability would make him a greater asset to the Knighthood?

[LET HIM THINK ABOUT IT. his mouth quirks to one side in a frown.] Maybe, maybe not. I think it can be a double-edged weapon. Sometimes it works in his favor, and sometimes it backfires. Does that make it okay? I mean ... even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Even Wynn recognizes that sometimes unpredictability is entirely what we need to keep our enemy off balance.

Why do you think he made Sir Bancroft, of all Knights, a Dragon's Claw?

[he ~chuckles fondly~ thinking of the elevator debacle. man those were simpler times huh.]

Do you believe his actions endanger his teammates unnecessarily on a regular basis?

Maybe not on a regular basis ... he endangers himself more than anyone else.

Do his actions jeopardize the goals of your mission?

So far? No. Although I feel like they could have the potential to.

How so?

He just seems to get so caught up in his own thoughts sometimes, I wonder if he remembers the objectives of any given mission. [he shrugs] Not that I can really know, either way ...

Have you tried speaking to him about this?

[65]

Not in so many words.

[koraith]

You may find it worth your time. Perhaps he'll surprise you.

Let's hope so.

Have you? Do you mean Thomas, or ...

[koraith]

Well, others, certainly, but Thomas is the most striking example. Many of us couldn't understand what Wynn saw in him. I'll admit that I was one of them: I thought he was reckless, dangerous even, and it struck me as poor judgment on Wynn's part to let him run about, doing as he pleased. In the end, however, I should have known - Wynn's faith is rarely misplaced.
