How are you liking it here?

It's all right. Just takes some getting used to. I, uh, ran into someone from home here. I guess she'd be considered my ward. I wasn't expecting that.

That feels like more than coincidence, doesn't it? [ she smiles warmly, obviously finding that comforting, not creepy. ]

What, like destiny? [maybe he's smiling a little too. ana has that effect on people i suppose.]

Yes, actually. [ she laughs with some small measure of delight at the word ] Believe me. I've seen it before.

You have? [that's a leading "tell me more" sort of question.]

I suppose you could say firsthand. A whole string of chance meetings too impossible to consider real chance. Even my husband, Jared - I was assigned to the unit that he served as captain of, in the New York Police Department, only to learn in the course of a few weeks that his family had served as ancient protectors of the line of Lurue for generations. My line. The gods brought us together, for a purpose. Along with others who'd been bound up in my past in ... a myriad of ways, both large and small. Some people are tied together by strands of destiny, I think. It doesn't mean we don't have the freedom to choose who we become - but it means we have the opportunity to do more, together, if we choose to embrace it.

That's a nice way to look at it. When destiny lines up in your favor, anyway. But we all can't draw the long straw, can we? Someone always comes up short.

[the remark is more observational than bitter. will doesn't consider himself that unfortunate — he's had a rough hand, yeah, but he still got abigail when it was all said and done.]

I don't think that anyone is truly destined to suffer with no chance for redemption or reward.

That's a nice way of looking at things. Wish I could think it myself, but I've seen too much darkness.

I've seen my share of it myself. Enough that sometimes it was hard to see the light. But things have always turned around.

Sometimes I'm not sure if I can trust the light. I could be seeing the sun, or I could be a moth flying into a bug zapper.

I take it that's the voice of experience talking, not just baseless paranoia.

I've been zapped more than I'd like to remember. Probably more than I actually can remember.

The Veil, you mean. You think it's taken more from you than you realize?

I have — there are huge gaps that I do know are missing. Which only makes me wonder more about the little things. What could have slipped under my nose?

I know it's hard to not think about it, but... having come here with no memory at all, and learning later what I'd missed-- I can't say anything would have been better, knowing.

That's what I've heard. Or at least, things like that are what I've been told, to help me cope. I guess it's just in my nature to want to know. Compulsively picking at peeling paint.

Maybe you'll find answers some day as well, then. It happened for me. I'm the last person to tell you it's impossible for you.

I just hope they're answers I'll actually want. [and not ... more of that jacked up shit abigail tried to share with him. L M A O will your life is nothing but disappointment.....]

If they're not, maybe there's some small comfort to be taken in knowing you're a world away from that life.

Doesn't seem like much, but then I guess small comforts are all that we have sometimes.
