I find it's much better to talk to them when they're awake but this is a special situation. [She's so very earnest that it's possible she believes everyone does this.]

...why's that? [He feels like talking to birds at all is probably a special situation but he's pretty cynical for a fairytale character sometimes.]

My friend here - [She strokes the top of his head with a delicate finger, voice lowered when she continues, like she's worried she might embarrass the poor bird.

Flew into a window. Rather by accident I should think and I thought perhaps, a few words of encouragement might help him to open his eyes.
