[Fortunately for Sam, this time around, when Dean arrives at the Castle? Sam hears about it.

He's made friends since back then, ones that know their relationship, and know that he would want to know. And they're right, because he's been waiting for this awhile, wants to know what took his brother so damn long to come home, wants to know if he'd being avoided on purpose or...no, it's probably on purpose.

Well, that was going to come to an end in a hurry. He doesn't particularly want this conversation, because it'll probably be uncomfortable and angry and horrible, but it has to happen. He can't sit on any of this forever.

Not when he's not the only one who knows.

So that afternoon, Dean will hear a rather...forceful knock on his door, following quickly by a voice.]

Dean, it's me. Let me in.

[Because he's not going away. Sorry, bro.]

[But that's not as important as what Dean says when he continues. Listening to it, it's almost a contradiction. Maybe losing Bobby and Cas would have been enough. If he lost all three in the same day...

...he presses his lips together, gives Dean a moment, before he essentially repeats the question, not knowing if he's really going to get an answer or not.]

What happened, Dean?

[Maybe if he can get it out, Sam can help shoulder that burden. He wouldn't have to carry those memories alone anymore.]

Iscariot came for us. For you specifically. Cuz of what you'd-- [ he stops, apparently having said more than he wanted to anyway. ] It all came out in the worst way, alright. That's all you gotta know.

[ back to the other question quickly ] Iscariot doesn't want the Prospect to win or lose. They don't want the bet to end, period. They like things just the way they are, and so they do everything they can to bury the fact that the quest even exists. They're trying to find a way to get to the Tree itself, and I dunno, burn it down, who knows. Basically, they piss off both sides right and left.

Because of what I'd become?

[Actually, no, that's not the best place to stop at all.]

So, it really was my fault?

[That's...a huge blow. He'd thought that maybe these had all been separate instances, but to have it all happen because this...group came after him?

That made it entirely his fault. Completely.]

That doesn't mean I shouldn't.

[It'd be one more reminder not to do the bad things. Just throwing that out there.]

You'd been lying to me for months, Sam. It was gonna catch up to you some time. And when it did, people died for it, and I still don't know to this day if you fessed up because you were cornered into it, or because you honest to God felt guilty that they died to keep us safe without knowing the whole truth.

Is that what you needed to hear?

[Sam holds his gaze for a moment, looking stricken, before his eyes drop to the floor. It's not really all the much more than what he already knew but putting it that way?

Yeah, it sucked. Big time.

He doesn't answer. He just soldiers on.]

Buffy knew about Iscariot.

[Considering they apparently took down two of the four of them, they must have been...pretty damn formidable, and now he's worried about her. Why would she know about them unless she'd run into them?

He's also pretty damn sure they're the zealots that Glasya mentioned before.]

Should I be concerned about them?

[Or do they only care about the other version?]

What should I look for? Any kind of cult symbols? Tells?

Some of 'em dress like Catholic priests, but the ones that don't are harder to spot. They're usually wearing a ring with Roman numerals on it. Shows what section they're from.

[Actually the exact opposite of awesome. How immeasurably fucked up.]

That gives me something to watch out for, at least.

If you're close enough to see their crucifix, it's probably too late already.

[...considering Dean is usually all 'let's take the fight to them,' hearing that is...especially disheartening.]

We used to both be protected from them tracking us down by magic. Cas... burned some sigils into us that meant nobody from upstairs, downstairs, or anywhere else could hit us with a scrying spell.

Maybe we can find some way to do the same for you. I don't know.

Might be worth looking into. Can spells directed at him hit me instead?

[He not a real big buff on magic just yet.]

If we're lucky, we won't have to find out. Iscariot knew we were untraceable that way. They got no reason to try again.

[That's...not exactly the most comforting, but it's still a start.]

What about demons? I'm used to them showing up from time to time, possessing someone, causing some damage, and then having to exorcise them back to Hell. We only ever found one weapon that could kill one, and it had some pretty limited ammunition.

I've got my hands on a knife that can kill 'em once and for all. Once in awhile they'll possess somebody but usually they just break through into this world and start crawling around like they own the place.

Until they get unlucky and run into someone like us.

Any chance there's another one of those knives lying around somewhere, or am I going to have to learn a few new exorcisms?

That was sarcasm. [ there's an edge of concern in his tone as he lowers his gaze at sam, picking up on that vibe easily. ] And don't give me that look.

I wasn't kidding around. Everything else we usually hunt is ass backwards. Considering I'm used to them being clouds of black smoke when they aren't walking around in someone's body, I'd say demons probably are too.
