[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.  This takes place after the Knights have returned from Dimitris' wedding.

Piano Room!

It's the music itself that first catches Lorne's attention, but his smile hitches even wider when he lets himself in only to find his own mentor sitting at the piano itself, looking quite at home as he plucks out that bright and cheerful tune of his.

"Well, well, should have known it was you," Lorne says warmly, approaching the piano and lighting resting his weight against top with one hand. "You know, with all that's been going on, I never have gotten to hear you play."

Sweets glances up at Lorne with a grin, before nodding a bit in agreement. "You're right, you haven't." He lets his fingers pause over the keys for a moment, before raising an eyebrow curiously. "Have any particular requests?"

He never minds playing for people, or stretching his musical legs, so if there's something Lorne wants to hear, he'll do his best to make it happen.

The demon lights up at the offer, adopting a thoughtful expression as he mulls it over, however briefly.

"May as well go for a classic," he remarks brightly, "Think you could play me a little Sir Elton? Take your pick, surprise me."

Sweets isn't as familiar with Sir Elton, unfortunately (knowledge pop culture 13). But he does know enough that he can probably pull out something, and after thinking for a minute he lets his fingers dance across the keys (perform piano 19).

It's a classic. You can't go wrong with a classic.

Lorne closes his eyes for a moment as he makes a show of relaxing against the piano, smile growing wider as he shakes his head a bit. "That's the stuff. You know, you're really quite good-- well, of course you know."

He laughs a bit at that as he nods. "Thanks. I've been playing since I was a kid. It's a great way to just help ... take the stress off, you know?"

"All too well," Lorne remarks warmly, running a hand against the edge of the piano's lid-- it seems like such a small thing, but the fact that this room exists at all makes him feel more at home, like he could really have a place here. "Music is food for the soul. It speaks to us in a way nothing else can, lets us express ourselves to the fullest. It's a beautiful thing, darlin'."

"That it is," he nods in agreement. "Sometimes you just need a place for emotions or stress to go. Music is a great outlet for that. And those moments where you find just the right song that speaks to how you're feeling in that moment? Or when you just want to scream so you turn on heavy metal."

Or maybe that's just him.

"It's incredibly cathartic."

"Never quite got into the metal movement myself, but I certainly see the appeal. A little too much clanging for my tastes, but all music has a message-- I truly believe that." All of it is worth hearing, worth playing, and all of it has the potential to mean something to someone out there. "You really do speak my language, sugar."

"It was more for my angry teenage days," he admits with a small smile. "I had it rough, and the music helped me get through it. Still does if I'm having a really crappy day." And the fact that he and Lorne are on the same page makes him smile. "Good, I'm glad. Some mentor and squire pairings don't work out quite as well."

"Sounds like quite the catharsis." Everyone needed one that worked for them-- and even if the style does nothing for him personally, Lorne is always glad to hear when someone chooses to let music do the job for them, and Lance is no exception.

"Sounds like we got lucky. A little more friction with certain match-ups? Can't say I'm surprised, not everyone can be a winner, although I'm sure there's reasoning behind each match."

"There is. Wynn considers these things very carefully. But he can't always predict for the way certain personalities might ... collide. But at the same time, that's why he has me." To help mediate things if needed and to help make sure that everyone stays on track and no one is setting their squires or mentors on fire.

Though that doesn't always help.

[highnotes]

"The benefits of having a professional onboard," Lorne remarks with a smile, pushing himself away from the piano. It feels a little strange, being this close to a piano without a drink in hand-- they've always gone together, in his experience.

"Say, feel like playing a duet? Been too long since I'd had a chance to tickle the ivories myself."

Sweets glances up with a small grin, before sliding over to give Lorne some room to settle in next to him. "I would love to. What'd you have in mind?"

"Now that's going to be tough. The possibilities are endless," Lorne begins, his smile hitching wider on one side. "How do you feel about Billy Joel?"

He grins in return, before starting up the opening bars of "The River of Dreams." "Billy Joel happens to be one of my favorites. But I try and stay away from the expected choices." He's heard "Piano Man" be done to death - he likes to keep some variety.

"Always change it up," Lorne agrees warmly, settling in to play his part, fingers working to weave his own contribution into the melody. The choice definitely Lance him a number of brownie points, being among Lorne's favorites-- so much so that simply humming along doesn't quite seem to be enough.

"In the middle of the night, I go walkin' in my sleep, from the mountains of faith--"

Sweets will mostly play along, giving Lorne the chance to sing a bit, but he also can't stop himself from harmonizing along when appropriate. It's music, man. You just got to go where it moves you, and this didn't feel like he would be stepping on any toes.

He also rather nails the piano solo (perform keyboards 17).

Lorne clearly approves, brightening whenever Lance chimes in, and by the time they reach the end, he's grinning from ear to ear, leaning to rest one elbow against the end of the piano as he offers his accompanist a round of applause.

"Very nice! Beautiful harmonies; we ought to do this on the regular."

Sweets grins as well in return, before nodding his agreement. "Yeah, I'd like that. We could probably get Paige in on this too. She's a cleric of Milil." Which means singing is basically in her job description. She would be thrilled with a regular opportunity to do so.

"Paige? She's a real sweetheart, I'd love to have her on board." They'd only met briefly during the aftermath of the assault on the castle, but she'd made a strong impression. "The more the merrier!"
