[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.  This takes place after the Knights have returned from Dimitris' wedding.

[ Before shipping out on her mission, Rey spends most of her time playing catch-up—or roll back, as it were—with this world's technology. Strange as it may seem, she can't help but consider this one to be a Shadow World and think of hers as the real world, the one that she's away from, because everything here is like a flimsy predecessor of what she's grown used to in her own galaxy.

She starts with the mechanics because it's the easiest, propping the hood of different models of car (given that they're the closest to a speeder that anyone here has) and tinkering around with the insides. More often than not, when she's going anywhere in the castle, she's covered in grease and oil stains, ruining shirt after shirt of flimsy material, though she can't seem to find anything more well-made in her size when she goes out looking.

Otherwise, she sits on a stool in the Hoard wing, tinkering with the phones and other surveillance and scanning equipment to get some sense of where they're at where that's concerned. It also happens to be the stage for reading lessons with Myri, where she takes a break from the tactile to struggle her way through a text. ]

[ the good thing about dating roy is that she learned quickly how to skirt out of the way of oncoming grease monkeys. and how to keep rey from continuing to ruin her clothes, which is what finds thea striding into the garage with a duffel bag that she drops by the car rey's tinkering with. ]

You alive under there? [ she crouches down to peer under the car and flash rey a smile. ] I've got something you might find useful. [ because inside the bag are a couple navy blue coveralls. thea comes from a life of privilege and she wouldn't really think twice about ruining a shirt every day, but she remembers how careful roy was at keeping the nice clothes he had staying nice. ]

Just a minute! [ A squelching noise echoes in the wake of some clanging metal noises, then Rey slides out on a little roll-y piece of wood. ] What's this? [ She sits up once she's out from under the engine, reaching over the grab the duffel bag. ]

It's a present. [ she shrugs. ] I was in this cute little thrift shop in London and I found a bunch of these and I thought they might be good for you.

[ both of them are embroidered with the names of the smol men that used to wear them, thea picked the most ridiculous: chet and stanley. ]

I've noticed you don't exactly try to stay clean when you're under there.

It'd be a wasted effort. [ She opens up the bag, pulling out a pair of the overalls and shaking them out. Her brow furrows slightly at the embroidery, but she examines the weight of the fabric and actually ... looks fairly excited about this. It's thicker than would have been practical on Jakku, but here ... ] ... You got these for me?

Yeah. You're out here all the time and [ she leans over, to peer at one of them. ] Chet's not using them anymore.

[ dante suggested she find an outlet for her oliver shaped anger and thea turned it into shopping. ]

[ There's a look in her eyes that seems to afford more significance than any normal person would to being bought used overalls. ]

Thank you. [ She pulls the pair she'd been examining to her chest, one hand closing around the fabric to gather and clutch it to her. ]

You're welcome. [ she pauses a moment, soaking in the gratitude, before adding, perhaps for clarity, ] When I first came here, not the knights, but into this world, I didn't have anything. I fell into Brussels and bummed around on people's couches until I got a job and could afford an apartment and I literally had to depend on other people to find me clothes and food and it was probably the worst few months of my life until I got on my feet. [ she tucks a lock of her short hair behind her ear. ] I figured I'd pay it forward.

I've done a lot of that. [ Not depending on the kindness of others, but scraping by, barely making it. She's spent too many nights hungry to not understand where Thea's coming from. She nods. ] So you know how much this means. [ Even if thanks to the Knights she can afford shit now—with real money, not bartering—she's still set in the mindset of a scavenger. ]

[impetere]

[So Thea says she has to learn how to drive.

Cora doesn't particularly want to learn how to drive, she's far more comfortable having other people drive her places, but Thea seems to be surprisingly good at getting her to try new things. Still, she's standing in the garage, staring at one of the cars like they're going to start spouting fire and swallow her whole.

Her head tips when she hears some footsteps behind her (listen 25), before turning and seeing Rey coming her way.]

Sorry. Am I in your way?

[forcevisions]

Not at all. [ Rey points past her at some of the cars further down, hoods already up to mark them for disuse. ] That's my project. What're you up to?

[impetere]

[And she's back to making a face again.]

Thea's going to teach me how to drive.

[forcevisions]

You don't look happy about it.

[impetere]

[She wrinkles her nose.]

I'm not big on enclosed spaces. Especially not if I'm the one driving it.

[forcevisions]

If that's the case, can't you just say "no" and explain?

[impetere]

[Her brow furrows a bit and she can't stop the smartass response that comes first.]

Have you met Thea?

[And then she recovers because it's possible that Rey hasn't.]

If Thea took no for an answer, I wouldn't be letting her dress me up like a doll for all the squiring parties.

[forcevisions]

[ Rey doesn't flinch at the question, her flatly expectant stare waiting for more than that. She has. If she didn't want to do something, she certainly wouldn't Thea drag her into it—regardless of how strong-willed she can already tell the other girl is. ]

I don't understand why you let her boss you around if you don't want it.

[witchwoman]

I found a book I thought you might enjoy. The pictures are very strange, but... Well, you can see for yourself.

[It's a book on mechanical stuff, with diagrams and all sorts of sciencey stuff that is way above Myri's head. This one is on planes, which is why it caught Myri's eye. She's forever fascinated by the fact that the knights travel by air.]

It may be a bit advanced, but I thought if you were reading about something you actually enjoyed, it might be a bit easier.

I've looked at specs like these before. [ She flips through some of the pages, interest seized immediately—enough that she doesn't even look up at Myri as she speaks. ] Not for anything like what you have here, but for starships where I come from. The diagrams make it easier, and if you have one to work with, it's easy to put it back together once you've taken it apart, or know what the word makes when you've heard what the part's called. [ It's all spot recognition—no phonics, no actual reading any more than it counts as reading to look at a symbol of a cartoon plane and know what it is. ]

[It's all super over Myri's head, but she's glad to see Rey enthusiastic about the material.]

Perhaps you could read it to me, help me understand the sort of work you do?

[forcevisions]

[ The look on Rey's face as she finally looks up at Myri says it all—she doesn't know if she can. The little she knew about reading before she came here was all aurebesh; this is something else entirely. ]

[Myri sees that look and it breaks her heart.]

We'll start the way that I started. The alphabet. [She switches gears and gets out some paper and starts writing out letters, explaining the sounds they make.]

Now... there are lots of words that ignore all logic. You'll have to tackle those as you learn then. But for the most part, it's just a matter of piecing together these sounds.

[ She nods, pushing the book between them and watching attentively for Myri to point out the sounds for each of the letters. Rey watches how she writes them, trying to evaluate if she'll be able to imitate the motion easily. Luckily, she supposes, she won't need to—this culture isn't so backwater that it doesn't have electronics for typed messages. ]

Why have both of these? [ She points to 'g' and 'j.' ]

[witchwoman]

This one- [She points to the G] can sound entirely different. Here. [She writes out 'get' and 'jet']

Get. Jet. But sometimes they'll sound very similar. [She writes down 'gem' and 'jam']

Gem. Jam. As I said- sometimes there's no logic to it.

[Or not any that she can teach. She knows how to read but hasn't spent any time learning about the history of the language.]

That doesn't make any sense. How are we supposed to know which sound it's meant to be, then?
