It's been a long journey at sea, as the Knights, Zatanna, and her father followed the enchanted compass' guidance from Europe, across the Atlantic Ocean. Risa stands on the bow of the boat, a shawl wrapped around herself as she stares out into the gathering gloom, frowning.

"The Devil's Triangle," she announces, out of nowhere. "That's our destination, isn't it."

[ zatanna's father steps forward, placing one hand on the slick railing, staring out at the waters ahead with a strange look on his face. ] No amount of experience may be enough, Captain.

There's magic in these waters. Powerful magic. [ he looks back towards Zatanna ] Do you feel it?

[cigam]

[ she nods absently, eyes also fixated up ahead. for a moment, she closes them, and when her lashes part, they glow bright blue for a moment. ] Warding magic.

[ she looks back to the crew ] Either to keep people out... or keep something in.

[uncurse]

Lucky we brought magic with us then. [ she looks to gold. ] Is there something you can do about the wards?

[undealt]

Only one way to find out.

[Gold raises a hand, closing his eyes and moving his wrist in slow, focused circles. It doesn't actually help him any. He just... Likes doing it. (dispel 22)]

[ gold can feel his own magic war against the warding spells... and then fade out quickly, dwarfed by the power they're facing. zatara watches, tight lipped, and shakes his head ] We are facing magic of no common rate. It will take a combination of our powers.

[David's been quiet for most of the journey, content to put a safe distance between him and the magic users on this particular trip, but hey, at least they're on a boat. This, at least, he's used to.]

Because that's never gone wrong at all.

[oh, whoops. There's his magic-ist nature showing.]

Is the magic controlled by a person or a thing?

[Charming has a bad feeling. He's kept close to Emma for most of the trip, not certain how he feels about the inexplicable urge to make certain that she's safe. He's still learning about how magic even works, so the idea of how dangerous it can be seems infinite.]

Whatever it is that's controlling it, I have a feeling it's not going to like this...

[Don't mind Gold. He's just... really pissed that it didn't work. And making the angry Scottish version of the face that the Blue Fairy made when his door was actually locked that one time.]

Or perhaps they'll invite us for tea.

[Hook can't help but feel a little smug when Gold fails. Even if it goes against the good of the mission. He enjoys seeing the other man lose out.]

Only one way to find out.

[ zatanna nods grimly and motions for the other casters to gather round. she takes her father's hand and closes her eyes, breathing deeply. ] Sdraw hsinav! [ her father repeats the gesture, saying the same words and channeling his power against the spell.

dispel magic checks! gold and emma if she wants to try it too... ]

[Yeah, okay, hippies. He'll just be over here with his totally masculine hand waving (dispel 22, because he's apparently really consistent with this spell).]

[ emma is staying pretty decisively out of this magic bullshit. she lingers with david and ... david, away from the circle of magic going on, and grimly observes the results of this second spell. ]

I hope nobody was planning on a surprise attack, because I'm pretty sure this is the magic equivalent of banging down the door.

[ between the three of them, the air in front of them begins to shiver and shimmer abruptly, making it very clear where the wards lie to even the non-magical eye.

as if a paintbrush were filling in the scene, the view behind the wards is slowly revealed: an island coast, upon which sits a heavy golden wall, impossibly high. set into it, between two imposing columns, are a pair of dramatic doors. there's no sign of life in place, but as the boat drifts to the shore, zatara's expression remains grim, even as zatanna's jaw drops at the sight. farther up the coast, spot checks of 17+ can see the ruins of crashed ships littered up and down. ] I've a feeling banging may be our only way in.

[WELL IF YOU'RE GONNA LEAVE THAT RIGHT WIDE OPEN.... Hook leers over at Emma.] What do you say, Swan? Think we're up to the challenge?

[Oh, and his nat 20 spot check means he sees the crashed ships. Lucky he's too badass at this shit to be disheartened at the sight. Or the magic people are..... whatever....]

[uncease]

[the words barely reach him before charming reacts, moving to stand purposefully in hook's path so that hook can't get a look at Emma. His jaw is clenched tight and without so much as a warning, he throws a quick jab for the man's face AND IM TAGGING ON MY PHONE AND NOT EVEN ROLLING. CHARMING DECKING HOOK IS CANON.]

[ emma's indignation is dwarfed by her shock as her father puts himself between them and punches hook for all he's worth. her eyes widen, and she puts a hand on charming's shoulder to attempt at pacifying him. over his shoulder, she remarks. ]

With no teenage girls in sight, that's probably the closest you're gonna get.

[ she looks out at the coast (spot 23). ]

Now maybe we could focus on not winding up like them, and get on with what we're actually here to do. [ she points out at the wrecked ships. ]

[cigam]

That's your cue, Captain. [ she side-eyes all three of you after the exchange. MAKE A PILOT CHECK ]

[unhand]

[Hook grimaces and rubs his nose, then turns back to the wheel, done flirting. It's unsteady at first (pilot 9) but he soon gains action point a bit more control (pilot 17), all concentration on the task at hand.]

[Gold got an 18 on his spot check if anyone cares, but truth be told, he wasn't even looking. Because Hook got punched. And it's funny.

Once Hook actually starts maneuvering the ship through the portal, he grabs one of the ropes to steady himself.] You all might want to hold onto something.

[With David's nat. 20 spot check he totally saw those ships. And he has no faith in Hook's piloting skills (nothing personal). He'll be holding on for dear life to the nearest sturdy thing he can find, thank you very much.]

[ the nearest sturdy thing emma can find is charming, so she's holding onto her dad now okok. not like clinging, but has a firm grip on his arm with one hand. ]

[When Emma's hand grips his arm, Charming looks at her, his other arm reaching across him to cover her hand with his.

Apparently when the going gets tough, those daddy instincts kick in hard. His gaze shifts back to the front of the boat, as if watching what's ahead might help at all.]

[ hook guides the ship onto land expertly and it comes to a halt on the sandy shoreline. the ramp is lowered and zatara follows his daughter down it, as she walks slowly towards the doors, compass in hand.

he sounds sad, and a bit tired as he surveys the doors, and shakes his head. ] We should never have come here. This place is not meant for mortals to tread.

[that's more of a mutter as he comes off behind him, legs a little shaky as they adjust from sea to land again. Galahad's sword is strapped to his back, and while his fingers itch to reach for it, he leaves it where it is for now.

He speaks up, this time more clearly:]

[ zatanna examines the mysterious symbols carved on the door, then runs one hand over them and says: ] Etalsnart.

[ the symbols begin to glow gold, and then seem to meld into english as she steps away quickly. these words are revealed: "sealed with blood lie the doors to the city of magi. only blood will open them, when the jewel without glows brighter than the jewel within. for upon no mortal must the magi cast their eyes again, and any mortal who dares to seek them out, seeks out only their own demise."

zatanna stares, looking determined and a little miffed by the message. ] Father. [ there's a warning note in her voice ] Who are the Magi?
