The paths to the Knighthood are as unique as the individuals who comprise its widespread organization. But all of their tales have one aspect in common: their first trip to the castle that serves as the primary headquarters for their operations occurs blindfolded, generally with the member who had recommended them for service as their escort.

Only when the car had pulled up to the front steps of the opulent building are they unmasked and allowed to follow inside.

Within the wide front hall is what looks like a receptionist desk to the left, manned by any one of a number of usually young Knights, who make the newly arrived sign into an ancient looking tome with hundreds of yellowed pages, along with today's date, usually accompanied by a look of curiosity from whoever's working the desk. Either way, they ask no questions.

They are then directed down the main ground floor hallway, which seems to stretch on for a great distance, passing tapestries of a mostly medieval flavor, suits of armor and weaponry lining the walls, and archways that open into opulent ballrooms, extra wings with numerous doors, poshly decorated parlors and more.

It's in front of an incredibly large painting that they come to a stop, drawing some kind of keycard out of their wallet or pockets and using it to open a small glass case containing a fire extinguisher to the right of the artwork. They pull the extinguisher upwards like a lever, making it clear it's just for show, and a loud mechanism creaks behind the wall, as the entire mural swings aside slowly to unveil a torch lit hallway. Escorts leave their charges to go on from here alone, usually with a nod or word of encouragement.

There's something solemn about the long stone corridor, made only more so by the fact that almost every inch of the walls on either side is covered in paintings, tapestries, rugs, artifacts, carvings, etc. that depict various images from the Knights' history, of those in armor battling against all manner of twisted and dangerous creatures. There's another constantly reoccurring image as well - of a gigantic silver dragon battling against armies of dark elves, or just one dark elf in particular, who is often depicted with a certain circular symbol somewhere on his wicked looking armor.

More prominent than this collection of madly arranged images is the incredibly large lettering inscribed over the large doors at the end of the hallway.

Thou Shalt Defend the Knighthood.
Thou Shalt respect all Weaknesses, and Shalt constitute thyself the Defender of them.
Thou Shalt not recoil before thine Enemy.
Thou Shalt make War against Injustice, without Cessation and without Mercy.
Thou Shalt never lie, and shall remain Faithful to thy pledged Word.
Thou Shalt be Generous, and listen to and Respect All.
Thou Shalt be Everywhere and Always the Champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil.

The room that stretches out beyond those doors, however, is enough to wrench the eyes off the inscription. It houses an incredibly large, thick, wooden table constructed in the round, surrounded by at least twenty five chairs. Rising from the center from the table is a massive statue that appears to be made of glass or crystal, depicting a dragon in flight. Suspended in the middle of the statue is a proud looking sword, that looks as if it's merely hovering there because of the statue's transparent nature. The statue rises up towards the vaulted ceilings as if it means to break free and soar out of the room, creating a very otherworldly aspect to the setting.

It may take a moment for those who enter to realize they are not fully alone, as Wynn waits on the exact opposite side of the table, facing a pair of incredibly tall sealed doors, that appear to be gilded in gold leaf. His hands are locked behind him, laced white cuffs falling over them, one ring visible on his left hand. His height is intimidating, at a full six foot seven, and his posture rigid and impeccable. He wears an old-fashioned tailored coat worked with silver and dark blues, over a silver and white doublet, framed with gleaming buttons that have tiny dragons worked onto them in brushed silver. He says nothing - doesn't even so much as turn, as if he doesn't even register that anyone has arrived.

Once inside, the doors fall shut with a ponderous thud, of what seems to be their own accord.

Every damnable bit of it. Is that rare?

[Riddick is very curious to hear more about how he came to be here, and if there is anyway to...change it. The desire of which still bothered him.]

[Riddick takes a moment to think about that, rifling through his head for any noticeable gaps that he can...tell are there. There are a few foggy patches that, so far as he can tell, have always been foggy. His early days of childhood, some of the time spent in Slams where he was subdued and under control of a substance to help keep him contained. Perhaps some of those memories seemed even more vague, the different prisons he'd spent time in seeming to blend together more than they had before.]

Nah, I seem to pretty much remember everything, maybe a few of the finer details are fuzzy, but the main picture is complete. So, how exactly does this Veil work? Is it an alien life-force we don't know about? Maybe it's only in this...Earth's dimension?

[Riddick nods, his fingers tapping out a short, quiet rhythm on the big table next to him. He's been told that over and again by Jack but he hadn't quite been able to accept the fact until Wynn confirmed it. Something in the way the other man explained it, the hidden something behind his words confirmed it more than anything Jack had said to him. Normally having what he wanted to effectively blocked from him would've pissed him off. Now, inexplicably, it seemed to make him sad. Not something he was used to dealing with.]

Jack also mentioned that not only has this happened to others but that this organization helps to...re-orientate people on how to get along. In this world, that is. [Though it pains Riddick to seem at all...needy or like he is asking a question, there is still a hint of it in how blase he tries to sound.]

What're the qualifications for that, exactly? [If it was having a clean slate then he was definitely shit outta luck.]

[Riddick crosses his arms, unsure how to really take anything this guy says. He had to be one of the toughest guys to read that he'd met so far, at least that he could remember, and he wasn't completely comfortable with that. Still, it was better than the nothing he had, and though he'd gotten along with less before it would be kind of...nice to actually belong somewhere. Clean slate. Riddick hated feeling intimidated.]

So, if my motivation was to- [He pauses, unsure as to how to say this, hating that he felt so... That he felt like, for the first time, he wanted to be noble. Good.]

I dunno, I guess if my motivation was to help... [He cuts himself off, honestly not knowing how to even...form the words he wanted to say. He was never one for talk anyway. Screw it.]

What about giving people second chances, if they have the right motivations and just need to...sort things through?

[Riddick finds himself inordinately happy that he seems to have pleased Wynn, a feeling that he'd never associated with other people before. Like his approval was something he wanted. Just how fucked up was this day gonna get? He takes a moment to let what Wynn said sink in, internalizing the meaning and considering if that is what he really wanted for himself. It was.]

Yes. [He paused again, another question resting on his tongue as he debated whether it would be a good thing to pose it or not, knowing that this subject could possibly be the thing that would get him fully rejected. If he were being completely honest with himself, now that he had started on this path he was coming to realize, with startling clarity, that this was what he had truly wanted, perhaps longer than he would ever know. He decided if he was going to do this, he might as well go balls-out. Clean slate, at least to one other person, and right now it was the person who's opinion seemed to matter the most.]

What if those people who want to "discover the best possible person they could be," what if they had a past that was... less than clean? I'm not talking about "Oh, I've made mistakes in my life," dirty. I'm saying what if they were the lowest of the low? What would you do with them?

[He nods again, almost absently though it is anything but. Here was his chance, all he had to do was reach out and take it, yet he found it so difficult to accept. He knew that it wasn't really Wynn that he wanted to confirm that he deserved this, it was himself that needed convincing. The things he'd seen, done, been forced to do and live through in his life... he was ready to get past all of it. It wouldn't leave him and he would never forget, but those experiences would be what would make him a better person, or so he hoped. Well. Here it went.]

I dunno how well I'd do with this, to be honest. I've never once tried to be noble in my life, hell I've hardly ever been nice. Shit like that don't come all that easy to me. But if you're willing, I think I'd appreciate a second chance. Seems about the best option I've ever had.

From what I gathered Jack was doing, that seems like a pretty good goal to me. I'd put myself behind something like that, or something along those lines. Think I'd like the chance to help others avoid the kinda life I've had, maybe... [He cuts himself off from saying 'maybe make up for some of the wrong's I've done.' No need to get too emotional and declarative.]

Sure, it seemed amenable enough, but the practical end of things makes me curious. Does this organization really take that code and follow it? Cuz that would really be something worthwhile, at least to me, if it really is something that's adhered to around here.

[Though it all sounds snarky and somewhat bitchy, Riddick says this with all seriousness. He isn't questioning Wynn and his personal feelings on the code, they're kinda obvious. He wants to know if everyone else here was held to the same standard, and therefore would all be not only responsible for themselves, but for each other as a team. A novel idea to someone like him.]
lightblindbadass: (Do you trust me?)

[personal profile] lightblindbadass 2012-02-14 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
[As Wynn speaks he seems to say the exact right words that Riddick hadn't known he needed to hear. Again. This guy was eerie. He takes a moment to look around the room, to think about the vows above the door, the man with whom he was keeping conversation, and about Jack who had already proven to hold all those tenants while making Riddick want to emulate him without even realizing it. Finally he looks back to Wynn, uncrossing his arms and nodding again.]

Then if you'll have me, I'd like to try and live by that same oath. I know I won't be perfect, like you said, but I'll sure as hell try to keep my nose clean. [Mostly. He reaches out a hand towards Wynn intending to shake on it. He didn't know how else to... go about it. :\]
