[ The two groups responsible for evacuation of Shadowkind travel to the island via stealth boat, which puts their arrival a little behind everyone else's.  They run aground not far from both the woods, and the harbor.   Edain grins out at the sleepy island, dressed in full armor, hand on the hilt of his sword.  Anastacia frowns as she watches the woods, however, clearly more on edge about what they have to do. ]

From here, everything looks so peaceful...

[As soon as Hook enters the place, Brantley joins in. He immediately covers his mouth with his a handkerchief, dampening the smell. He uses his phone as a flashlight and check the label.]

Does anyone read Chinese?

[Yeah, he doesn't speak the language and whatever the cause, his brain seemingly stops working during this mission (wis 6).]

[Hook's still rolling his eyes at Max's millionth vague warning.]

None of us like it, mate.

[He'll step forward and try and open the crate with his hook, though.]

[ the horrible smell increases as he lifts the crate open with the slightest prying ...

and he's met with a hideous sight: stacks of what look like human hands and arms fill the crate to its brim. max takes a single step backward, shaking his head. ] Leftovers.

They're leftovers.

[Brantley retreats a step as Max does. His face turns pale as he sees the grotesque sight. His expression shows shock for a brief moment before it turns into the look of anger.]

Of what? Leftover of what!? [His voice trembles as he tries to tone down the sound of his voice. He is clearly vexed at the sight, hearing his whisper sounds like a muffled scream(will 21).]

I-- I don't-- [ it doesn't actually sound like 'know' is the next word he intends to say but it doesn't matter because there's a strange scraping sound ... and then a weird chittering as a number of small creatures skitter around the crates, or crawl up on top of them, pausing to hiss at them all. they have lumpy heads with crab legs, and giant mouths full of what appear to be stone teeth.

[Brantley is immediately alerted by the sounds of the critters. Normally, Brantley would try to talk his way out of a fight first before starting to throw punches, but anything with stone teeth and lives in a slaughterhouse can't be friendly, right? In this case, he better punch first and ask questions later, but how do punch a crab? The answer is no, you don't punch a crab, so he puts on his guard and observes the environment instead, trying to find anything useful for fighting the creatures or detect possibly hidden enemies. (spot 21)]

[Hook, on the other hand, is perfectly capable of punching a crab, but he'd rather shoot it. He draws his gun and fires at the creepy thing (atk 26, dmg 4).]

[ there's not much in the way of useful items around. a fire extinguisher hangs by the door, and there's a hammer sitting atop one of the crates, obviously used to nail them shut. a few stray boards lie here and there as well. max yanks out his gun, stepping back and firing at the same one as hook, his shot taking the thing out. it flips on its back, legs curling in on themselves, but there's still plenty more. ]

Vermin. [ edain's lip curls up in disdain as he pulls his longsword. he strikes one atop a nearby crate (atk 23, dmg 14), spearing it through its hard shell entirely. ]

[ Adi draws his sword, as well, attempting to fend off one of the crabs approaching from the floor (atk 19, dmg 5). In the meantime, sounding suitably grossed out: ]

Are you saying these things ate them?

[ adi strikes one as well, but a second skitters out right on top of it, and the two of them swarm him (atk 6 & atk 6), trying to nip at his heels. two more swarm up on edain (atk nat 20 & 19; total 21 dmg), bites cutting right through his armor with their adamantine teeth :') two attack max (atk 18 & 4; dmg 5), and two more brantley (atk 16 & 18; dmg 18 & 4 if either hit), and finally two on hook (atk 16 & 4; 8 dmg if the 16 hits) ]

They surely have the ability to do so.

[The first crab misses Brantley by an inch, but the second one manages to break through his defense. Brantley definitely doesn't want to get bitten again, as the first bite hurt enough. Maybe they should just burn the shack and finish them all at once. But that would attract unwanted attention. For now, he is just going to take them down one by one. He delivers a kick to the nearest stone-teethed monstrosity. (Atk 16, dmg 5)]

This is not good. There might be dozens of them. We need to clear them all at once.

[And normally with swarm like this there's always the one who is bigger than the others. It wouldn't be fun to get chomped by a 10 feet-tall crab, right?]

If you have ideas, we'd love to hear 'em. [Hook's managed to evade both crabs. He drops his gun, opting to quick draw his sword instead, and stabs downwards on one with it (atk 25 (nat 19 crit) dmg 16 with penetration) before bringing his hook down somewhere near the other (atk... 9).]

[ hook spears one dead, aww yis. max backs up and takes another pair of shots to kill one of those that'd be on him. ] Leftovers from Sarandis' science projects, that's what.

Don't see what's t'be done about 'em now. [ more stabbing! (atk 34, atk 29, annnd a crit = two more dead crabs ]

[ Adi manages to dodge the attempts to snap at his legs, though his reactive kick to one of the crabs is a bit haphazard (atk 14, dmg 4). ]

Can't any of you use magic? [ Asks the cleric, but to be fair a big dramatic fire spell or something would be really handy right now. Who thought a team full of swashbucklers was a good idea. ]

[ the one adi kicks skitters backwards after taking the blow, but then back in to cautiously nip at him again (atk 14). the other crab on him looks more cautious now as well (atk 8). one manages to snap at max (dmg 14), while another bites at hook, easily dodged (atk 18).

brantley still has two on him, who keep right on him, unrelenting (atk 12 and 19; dmg 16 & 7 if they hit) ]

[Despite not being a full-time swashbuckler like the rest of the team, Brantley is not a mage either. In fact, he is the opposite of a mage. Hating magic and stuffs.]

No, not me.

[He replies as he manages to dodge another bite but the second one does hit him. Brantley tries to fend them off again by delivering a right-left kick combo, but since his specialty is boxing and not kick-boxing, he fumbles and probably hits other thing instead (atk 5, offhand atk nat 1). Hopefully not the head of one of the swashbucklers.]

[ his crit fail involves... stepping his foot right down onto the thing's maw, so it gets an attack of opportunity, chomping down right through his shoe (atk 23 - critical hit for 16 dmg o_o) ]

Don't you think if we could magic these beasts away we would? [He tries for the first crab again, stabbing down with his rapier (atk 21, dmg 2), then swipes at it wildly with his hook again (atk 8).]

Let's just hope they stop coming. [ backing up backing up, bam bam, he hits with one shot at one in front of brantley (dmg 5) ]

[ edain also tries to lance those around brantley - (atk 29, 30, and 24 all hit: 14 dmg downs the first one, 26 penetration damage the next), so he moves onto one by adi (10 dmg), taking out the one he's already injured ]

[ permission from melissa to roll for adi until she's back, soooo with a 16 attack, he stabs at the creature still near to him (11 penetration dmg!), nearly taking it out. it snaps back at him, overly cautious (atk 6), while another goes for max again and misses, and the third for hook, also probably missing with a 13, go things. ]

Gah! [And that bite took down Brantley. He is on the floor, drifting slowly but surely to the other side of life. And if he doesn't survive this, please don't put "He lies Brantley River, victim of crab attack," on his tombstone.]
