[Fortunately for Sam, this time around, when Dean arrives at the Castle? Sam hears about it.

He's made friends since back then, ones that know their relationship, and know that he would want to know. And they're right, because he's been waiting for this awhile, wants to know what took his brother so damn long to come home, wants to know if he'd being avoided on purpose or...no, it's probably on purpose.

Well, that was going to come to an end in a hurry. He doesn't particularly want this conversation, because it'll probably be uncomfortable and angry and horrible, but it has to happen. He can't sit on any of this forever.

Not when he's not the only one who knows.

So that afternoon, Dean will hear a rather...forceful knock on his door, following quickly by a voice.]

Dean, it's me. Let me in.

[Because he's not going away. Sorry, bro.]

What happens when one of them wins?

I don't know if they even know. Heaven had six hundred and sixty six chances to pass one of us through. If they hit the magical number of the Beast without doin' that, they saw Hell wins the bet.

... I was their thirteenth to last shot.

[familybusiness]

Oh. [Give him a moment.] Wow.

[More beer was a good decision.]

Sounds like that would make both sides...pretty desperate.

[With one finally so close to winning, and the other trying frantically not to lose.]

You better believe it. They had to be, to go thinkin' I'd fit the bill.

[familybusiness]

Dean...

[That wasn't what he'd been going for. Not even kind of.]

...there's nothing wrong with wanting to be a hero. It's what they're doing that's wrong.

Yeah, well they can have it. Cas said sometimes decades go by without a Prospect popping up. By the time the next twelve roll out, we'll be long gone.

Maybe that sounds cynical, or like giving up, but unless I find a way to break their little system before I kick it, I'm not sure what else to say.

I should've known. You can't save everybody. Doesn't work that way. Never has.

[familybusiness]

I don't think it sounds like either of those things. You shouldn't have to shoulder everyone's fate like that. No one should.

But if you want to try and find a way to break the whole thing, you know I'll help you.

[likedillinger]

Honestly, right now? All I want is nothing to do with any of it, ever again.

[familybusiness]

Do you think they'll really leave us alone?

[likedillinger]

Aren't you the one who just arguing that's what they told you?

I wan't arguing anything. I said that's what I was told. There's a difference. I'm asking for your opinion.

I've wanted to believe what she's told me, but she also can't know everything. And considering she's withheld information on the reasoning that I'd have to talk to her Dad about instead isn't exactly the most comforting thing.

[A beat.]

I said no to that offer, by the way.

But she tried. She told you she didn't want to drag you into this and then dangled that carrot in front of you anyway. Because she's a liar, Sam. She's Lucifer's daughter, and that means she learned from the best there is at how to pull peoples' strings.

[familybusiness]

She said she dragged me in so I wouldn't be in the dark. So that when I did find out what happened, I wouldn't make the same mistakes and go on some kind of angel-hating vengeance thing. She told me she just wanted us to...'kiss and make up.'

[And he doesn't want to think she was lying. And yes, he did the air quotes with his fingers.]

The last person who cared about me like that was Madison. I guess I just attract monsters, huh? [A beat.] Did that even happen over here?

[It's a...valid question.]

You can't compare this to what happened with Madison. [ so that's a yes. ] Madison used to be human. Glasya's never been anything but she is, and that thing is incapable of caring about you the way you're so desperate to think she is.

[familybusiness]

[He could argue this point forever, and he knows that Dean will never believe it. He doesn't for a second believe there isn't something there, but he also doesn't know how truly selfish it is, or if she has ulterior motives.

He trusts Dean more than anyone, and he's instilled some doubts in him.

And even if he hadn't, it wouldn't matter. They both had known it would come to this, at some point. Maybe she'd thought he'd choose differently. She probably should have known better than that.]

I'll deal with her.

[familybusiness]

[He manages to mostly keep his cool, though his shoulders get a little tense as he internally bristles.]

That won't be necessary. Pretty sure she has had a feeling this was coming since she first saved me from getting shanked.

If you're lookin' for me to thank her for that, you got another thing coming.

[familybusiness]

Wouldn't dream of it.

[Oh look, more beer.]

She was gonna do whatever she had to do to get you to trust her. You get that, don't you?

Hell, for all you know, you were only in a place to get shanked in the first place because she put you in that position.

[familybusiness]

Yeah, I get that. I don't think her being there was a coincidence for a second.

[He never did, not once he found out who she was.]

Walking into Robin's bar was kind of asking for it, though. After...

[He lets out a heavy breath.]

What happened to Bobby, Dean? She said Iscariot killed him, but I tried looking it up, and I couldn't find anything.

That's because nobody does a cover-up like Iscariot does. And the one thing they want covered up more than anything is the whole Prospect deal in the first place. [ but that doesn't answer the question. give him a sec. ]

It was a helluva day, Sam. It was the day I told the angels screw it.

[familybusiness]

Why?

[But that's not as important as what Dean says when he continues. Listening to it, it's almost a contradiction. Maybe losing Bobby and Cas would have been enough. If he lost all three in the same day...

...he presses his lips together, gives Dean a moment, before he essentially repeats the question, not knowing if he's really going to get an answer or not.]

What happened, Dean?

[Maybe if he can get it out, Sam can help shoulder that burden. He wouldn't have to carry those memories alone anymore.]

Iscariot came for us. For you specifically. Cuz of what you'd-- [ he stops, apparently having said more than he wanted to anyway. ] It all came out in the worst way, alright. That's all you gotta know.

[ back to the other question quickly ] Iscariot doesn't want the Prospect to win or lose. They don't want the bet to end, period. They like things just the way they are, and so they do everything they can to bury the fact that the quest even exists. They're trying to find a way to get to the Tree itself, and I dunno, burn it down, who knows. Basically, they piss off both sides right and left.

[familybusiness]

Because of what I'd become?

[Actually, no, that's not the best place to stop at all.]

So, it really was my fault?

[That's...a huge blow. He'd thought that maybe these had all been separate instances, but to have it all happen because this...group came after him?

That made it entirely his fault. Completely.]
