[ Some fun new features of this Christmas:

1.) friends to spend it with who are equally uninterested or incapable, for one reason or another, of spending it with their own family,
2.) income sufficient to purchase meaningful gifts,
3.) casual and comfortable arrangements rather than the stringent expectations of St. Agnes' strictest nuns.

Skye makes her way into the TV room with a towering stack of presents for all of those in attendance, which she dumps readily in a corner of the room before seating herself on the couch with a slice of pie. The presents are all sentimental in nature, nothing extravagant—they need not be, when everyone here is perfectly capable of buying for themselves what they need. It really is the thought that counts.

So how many people here actually celebrate Christmas? [ Because she realizes it after some talking that she's atheist, Malina is Muslim, and Alex is Jewish, and Kali was raised in a lab. ] Like, culturally.

[Malina considers for a moment, ticking people off her fingers before pointing back into the crowd.]

Gwen might. She's Welsh. I think there are Christians in there somewhere.

[Aside from that, however ... ]

So, in other words, you're saying this is just an excuse for second Thanksgiving for most of us.

Yes. But with presents!

[because Thanksgiving does not normally have presents.]

Which, speaking of ...

[and she will turn to face the tree so she can start going through presents to find Skye's.]

Well, presents do make it better. [ She joins Malina to find the one to exchange for it while they're at it. ]

[And she will fish out a gift bag with this adorable van inside, handing it over to her with a smirk.]

Not the real thing, but I figured it would help remind you of your roots.

[ Her eyes widen, and a smile starts to break across her features as she takes it. But as her eyes study the little plush, slowly, the smile decays into a teary-eyed look, and finally into something deeply sad but otherwise unreadable. Only then does she look up and, nodding, very solemnly say, ] Thank you.

[ it seems to mean something to her beyond words. ]

[ gus looks around like... shrug, sipping his glass of scotch and looking, surprisingly, unirritated at the party. it might be because he and malina have been pregaming since breakfast, but maybe it's just because fambly. (it was the 10am mimosas though.) ]

Not me. [ mellie chuffs, inhaling an entire meat pie like a happy bear. ] Not the bear either, apparently.

I'll let you know if I meet a bear who does celebrate. [ lmao really ]

[ mellie chuffs again, lifting her head as if to say, yes please do let us know. i'd like a bearfriend. ]

Watch out, she'll get attached to you and then when you come home from missions she'll lick you to death.

Yeah, probably. She doesn't have any cubs of her own, so she gets you guys. Learn some Korean and you guys can tag team.

I've had pretty good luck with Rosetta Stone in the past. It could happen. [ she says it like a warning, don't challenge her. ]

I mean, I did. Sort of. As much as an atheist Jewish family does. There was definitely a tree and presents.

Congratulations. You're officially the most culturally confused atheist Jewish family I've ever heard of. [ She shakes her head like what even these people. ]

No, okay, there's a reason. We didn't at first, when I was really little, didn't celebrate anything. But one year my older sister asked my mom why Santa hated us, all upset and shit. She made my mom cry, and then we had a tree and presents every year after that.

[hacker]

Your sister is either the cutest thing I've ever heard of or the wilest little manipulator — and given who her brother is, I'm betting it's the second.

Considering it's my older sister and not one of my younger ones, you're probably right. She probably wanted in on all those fuckin' presents.

Truthfully, I'm kind of impressed.

The only Christmas I remember was when I was five and we went to my grandmother's house and my mom lost her biscuits over politics and we basically never did big family get-togethers ever again.

[And this is why Topher lived in Pegasus HQ and never saw his family ever.] They usually put a tree up in my division at Pegasus, because we might be doing dubiously moral things, but golly gee we're just like everyone else. [he shoves a handful of chips into his face, rolling his eyes a bit.] It's human programming. As soon as Thanksgiving is over, you just need a tree in your lobby, regardless if you care about the holiday or not.

Leave it to Topher to make Christmas about brainwashing. [ how is this her family. ]

I can't help it if Christmas is the most overly commercialized subliminal holiday. It's not even a bad thing in this case. It's a comforting melting pot that all the religions of the world can embrace, even if we don't care about a baby being born in Bethlehem. I mean look at us. Atheist [he points to himself], Jew, Muslim.... [he points to Alex and Kali in turn] And you... I'm gonna guess agnostic?

[hacker]

Maybe the nuns left an impression after all. [ But she nods to confirm his assessment, on that note. ] Not a Christian in the bunch.

[andblockbuster]

[he's so pleased with himself.] But we're bound by a love of eggnog, presents, and songs about reindeer.

And one more thing. [ She points up. Mistletoe. And without more warning than that, she will kiss him on the cheek. ]
