While scams about genetically modified corn wouldn't normally fall under the purview of the Knights, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation has called in assistance from Wynn because of reports of the two agents investigating the matter running into some sort of Shadowkind that attacked them at the silos containing the corn in question.

The Knights fly out to Tennessee to check out the situation, and Christos drives them directly towards the silos in question, which are three lonely, old looking structures set in the middle of a field far away from any other civilization.

[ the girl is actually insanely hard to read. almost unnervingly so.

"Like the other people?" she asks. "The man and woman?" ] Those were FBI agents. They were looking to help your father about something else.

[ "Why does the FBI care about us?" she asks, and looks very troubled by the concept. "We're just normal!" ]

Normal is overrated.

[ squint intensifies, amy's head tips slightly, gears turning in her head. she's willing to bet that once they leave they might find their own monsters of the id. (wis 19) which is why she decides to say fuck it and crouches in front of the girl so she's not a towering ginger amazon and closer to her level. ]

It's not about your dad, kid, we really are trying to keep him safe. It's about the man your dad works for. Do you know anything about him?

[ she purses her lips and shakes her head, just as robert walks back in. he looks between them both, then puts the files on the table and moves to put one hand on his daughter's head.

"Cindi, what are you doing out here? Go back to your room, please, sweetheart. We'll be done here soon."

she narrows her eyes at him, doubtfully, but obeys, leaving without another word. christos waits until she's gone before speaking up. ] Your daughter didn't seem ill. She must be feeling better. [ whether there's an accusation in there or not, christos manages to cover it expertly in his tone.

"Well, she's not ill in the traditional sense. Cindi suffers from ... terrible anxiety attacks, at times. When she asks to stay home, I've found it best to let her, sometimes." ]

[ amy straightens up as the girl leaves, crossing her arms. ]

Cindi mentioned the FBI, was she here when they stopped by?

[ that seems to surprise, even bother him. "She knows about that?" he asks, brow knitting in concern. "She wasn't supposed to-- I didn't want to upset her. She was here when they came, but upstairs, in her room. I didn't think she heard anything." ]

She did, unfortunately.

[ amy looks at christos pointedly like I THINK WE FOUND THE PSION. i'm just saying. perhaps robert doesn't know how to deal with her ability and thinks medicating her is the best bet. or maybe anxiety + psionic abilities are a bad combo for a preteen girl. it's hard out there for the tweens. ]

She's very worried about you, actually. Seems to feel almost like you're being targeted, I would guess.

[ Sebastian, had been standing outside finishing another cigarette, and just invited himself on back inside. In time to see the kid going back upstairs, it didn't seem that strange to him. He waited till she was at the top of the steps just kinda watching waiting to see a monster attack or something before moving to follow the voices and lean in the doorway.]

[ "Targeted," he says, scratching his head. "I don't know why she'd get that idea. I"m not-- the FBI need my assistance with a certain matter, that I don't believe I can speak about to you, I'm sorry. But it isn't anything like that." ]

Mr Quail. [ amy fidgets, uncertain if she's making the right call, but she goes for it regardless. no one came back from the future to stop her, it's clearly okay. she drops her voice at least. ] Is Cindi a psion?

[ the man goes pale, for just a second, his eyes darting between each of them in turn. christos zeroes in on his reaction, folding his arms. "Wha-- what do you mean? Why would you think that?" ]

Your child may be unwittingly putting others in danger, Mr. Quail. I suggest you cooperate.

[ his mouth drops open like a fish for a second, before he stammers: "I -- I thought this was an IRS matter." ]

It's not. [ just going balls to the walls, what is there to lose? ] We were brought here by the agents you spoke with. We've experience with -- [ she doesn't want to say paranormal or supernatural because psions are natural. hmm. ] The extramundane. They thought we might be able to tell what the creatures that attacked them were.

[ "C-creatures," he says, looking more and more concerned as she speaks. "What does this have to do with my daughter? Is she in danger?" ] We're trying to ensure that no one is. But we need the truth about the girl.

[ he hesitates further, but finally relents, looking very distressed about doing so, running a hand down his face with a groan. "We... we've tried to keep it secret. There's so much prejudice against those born with-- with these powers. She's just a little girl!" ]

[ Sebastian was still idly listening, seeming to take more interest. He's got a soft spot for kids.]

Mr Quail. [ her hands lift in surrender, trying to calm him. (diplomacy 25) ] We're not here to out her or to get you lot in trouble, but she's hurting people and we need to sort out how to stop that. She's your little girl, I know you'd do anything to protect her.

[ it's obvious once she starts talking that there is nothing disparaging in her opinion of psions, she genuinely wants to help him and his daughter. ]

The FBI came out here originally about your boss, yeah? If we can stop whatever he's up to, all this will go away and maybe you could get a tutor for Cindi, to help her with her powers. But we need your help.

The girl may need to be monitored, at all times, until then. I don't know that this is the safest place for her. [ undermining ur diplomacy checks since two-thousand-whenever-this-game-started. quail looks between them, christos' words setting him at further unease. "I'm doing everything I can to aid their investigation. I just don't think that locking cindi up somewhere or setting government watchdogs to babysit her is going to... yield good results with her. I want to help," he adds, looking at amy. "But I'm not sure what the best way to do that is." ]

[ gently force chokes christos tbh.

she doesn't even bother hiding the disgruntled look on her face either. ]

I don't think locking her up is going to help either. But the FBI agent we've been working with, Mulder, he seems to specialize in this sort of thing. He might be able to help Cindi and keep her here with you.

Do you know what your boss is doing?

[ "They're fixing prices, that's what I've given the FBI information about. I told them where to find the falsely labeled corn - they claimed they were going to go investigate the silos," he says. ]

They did, yeah. That's where they were attacked the first time. That's when they called us in.

[ she sighs, frustrated, because she knows she is missing something but she can't figure out what it is for the life of her. cindi is obviously trying to protect her dad and her small little home, whether consciously or not, but amy can't get a handle on what the bloody corn is all about.

not knowing isn't exciting this time, it's only defeating. ]

[ So given I lost the tracking to this thread somehow, we're going to assume the Doctor found a book or a particularly interesting rock and got distracted. But the distraction is apparently over, and he appears back at Amy's side. ]

What did I miss?

[ He looks over, oh right cover yeah. ]Hello!

[ that sounds exactly like the doctor tbh. christos shoots him a not-at-all-disguised look of annoyance when he comes in.

"I'm... going to go get her out of room, if that's alright," the man says, and christos nods, keeping an eye on him as he heads for the stairs. when he's out of ear shot, he turns back to the others. ] That girl has no control over her abilities. She needs to put in contact with a teacher.

But you don't need to act like she needs to be taken away from him!

[ she doesn't have her own parents, the idea of taking cindi from what seems to be her only surviving parent is horrifying to amy. ]

Not permanently. But this man is clearly unable to keep her from harming others. He's endangering everyone out of his sense of parental entitlement.

[ everything in amy is screaming for her to be like "she was fine until people started asking questions", but she doesn't know if that's true or not. ] He's a single dad, how's he s'pposed to afford a special school for her? We can't come in here to help people and end up puttin' a burden on them, that's not fair.

She needs to go.

[ Sebastian finally spoke up.]

It'll hurt at first sure, but better to have her powers under control rather than accidently killing anyone. No kid needs that on them.

Ah well this is working isn't it? All of this. Great yes, great. Insult her father because that'll work wonders.
