So... you're new, then. Got it. [He glances to the tree, then back to her.] It's a holiday. Uh- celebration. Sort of religious, but you don't really have to follow that part, honestly.

I know what a holiday is. [ She may not have the most smarts, but she's not stupid. ] What does the tree have to do with it?

[He opens his mouth, about to answer, but... just closes it again.]

Tradition? Dunno, actually. Just is a thing you do around this time. Put some presents under it, everyone unwraps them on the 25th of December. Eat way too much, get incredibly drunk, call it a day.

[farmgirlfighter]

[ Gaz weighs his words. The eating and drinking part doesn't sound half bad. ]

And what about the fat man and the baby born in a barn? Where do they fit in?

Ah... [He lets out a small laugh.] That gets a little more complicated. So it's all one celebration, right? But there's some religious bits and some not. The baby? That's the religious stuff. Supposed to be the son of a god, a savior. And the fat bloke is just some jolly wanker that gives out presents to good little boys and girls.

The fat man puts the presents under the tree... [ And somehow a demigod savior child has something to do with it.

Gaz shakes her head. ]

I think I'll stick with the feasting part. I doubt I'll ever actually understand the whole [ she waves a hand in the vague direction of the tree ] thing.

Probably for the best. For adults it's mostly just an excuse to eat and drink too much and buy each other cool shit. [He gives a shrug]

Sorry, didn't catch your name. I'm Andrew. [He holds out a hand to shake.]

[ She takes his hand. Her handshake is firm and soldier-like. ] Gaz. Like you said, I'm new. [ Releasing his hand, she takes a deep breath and looks around the room again. ] Still... adjusting, you know?

[ Such as... ] Why is the money paper? Where's the value in that? And the money that is coins, it's all silver or nickel. How am I meant to know how much is worth what?

Actually physical money is less common than you'd think. It's more of this-

Electronically keeps track of how much you've got, but with this job, you probably don't need to worry about it.

Sorry. I never know how much people know. Okay so electricity. Like the lights. There's also shit like-- Okay I'm crap at explaining it, but it stores your money. Just trust me on that, yeah?

[ She had noticed the lights weren't oil lamps or torches. Between that and the tiny colored lights on the tree, she supposes there must be a lot of this "electricity" thing around. ]

Probably for the best. I can explain it better during your equipment orientation. Believe it or not, I run those these days. Just a little easier when it's in a professional setting. But ah- where are you from, if you don't mind me asking.

Cormyr, though I'm guessing that means nothing around here. [ There's a lot she can't remember about her life before she arrived in the desert, covered in blood and half-dead, but she doubts she could ever forget the name of Cormyr. ]
