Do you ever miss the city?

All the time. But a lot of the things that would make me go home are here - and my life was going nowhere to begin with. I was ... riding Gus' coattails for a lot of it. Here, I'm making my own way.

[ambitionist]

Yeah ... [he trails off, biting the inside of his mouth while considering something.] ... yeah. Guess there wouldn't be much for me to go back to, either.

[She watches him for a moment before asking, curiously.]

Family trouble?

[ambitionist]

[he considers this, then shrugs.] That's one way to put it.

[She nods, though hers is not really exactly the same.]

Me too. Any actual blood family I have there likes to pretend I don't exist.

[ambitionist]

Huh, me too. I was essentially disowned, so.

[bredinthebone]

Same. My grandparents didn't want a demon for a granddaughter.

[She says it casually, like she's distanced herself somewhat from the phrasing, but it's the distance that's more telling than anything else. It still hurts.]

[ambitionist]

[he frowns and his brow furrows, like he wants to offer something more sympathetic like "aw man that sucks" but ... he is alex. and sincerity is hard.]

That's rough. [maybe he'll just ... pour himself a drink so he can talk without having to maintain looking at her] Iiii was in the mob. Not Italian, Russian. Uh, Barkov. My family didn't like it very much.

So they disowned you for being in the mob?

[Just to make sure she's following the story properly and that his family wasn't the mob.]

Yeah. Mob kind of disowned me too, but that's a different story.

[She takes another sip of her drink before ...]

So I take it that movies are just really dramatic and you don't get cement shoes when you're disowned by the mob? Or is that just the Italians?

[ambitionist]

[his eyebrows raise a little.] Cement shoes are a lot of trouble when you could just shoot somebody. Or flip them. ... Turn them in. There's more of that with Russians.

[She's very drunk. Don't judge her for her pop culture knowledge right now.]

Ah. Makes sense. I mean, my dad was a degenerate but he wasn't that organized.

[ambitionist]

[he snorts.] It wasn't that bad. But then I fucked up and got a hit on me, so. Homecoming trips probably aren't in my best interest. I like to think I've been doing okay at staying off the radar and convincing anyone who'd have it out for me that I'm already dead.

[She nods once before frowning slightly.]

So long as you stay out of mob-related missions, you'll probably be safe. And if not, I could always electrocute them for you?

[ambitionist]

Thoughtful, but probably not needed.

[bredinthebone]

[She nods a bit before shrugging.]

Just putting that out there. But good to know.

[ambitionist]

It's cool. Good to know you've got my back. It's just not ... something I talk about with most people here.

[She nods in agreement.]

I get it. You ever want to vent about it though, you know where to find me.

Yeah, sure. Thanks.

[She nods in agreement, before picking up her beer.]
