[He pauses, his face falling for a second before shaking his head.]

No. But they built me a suit to monitor my vitals and stuff and Wynn had me hook it up to the Hoard computers so they can continue to keep an eye on me.

[There's a beat, and he smiles softly.]

Kind of like they're keeping an eye on me in spirit.

That's quite the gift. [ Personally, she thinks it rather sounds like he's their science experiment, but to each their own. ]

[Oh, he's totally their science experiment. But they've also become his best friends, so he's willing to forgive the science experiment aspect.]

I've been really lucky. There were other metahumans who wound up way worse off than me.

Does that make you lucky? Or does it just make them unlucky?

[Heh. Well. Most if it was Eobard Thawne paying chess with his life, but he'd like to think that he's lucky that he had the chance to find Caitlin and Cisco.]

I guess it's kinda both. But I can only really speak to my experiences, you know? I don't know what things were like for them before the particle reactor explosion happened.

I'm sure there are plenty who wouldn't necessarily envy your life after it either, though. [ Non-judging here. ]

[He gives a small shrug.]

No, probably not. But I like to look on the bright side. Rather than focusing on what I don't have and am losing, I tried to look at what I could do with it and I've been able to help ... so many people.

[ To be fair, she means the testing and prodding, not the powers themselves, but she has a feeling he'd give her a similar answer regardless. It's not an attitude Rey is unfamiliar with: pessimism, even realism, is a good way to drown in the sands of Jakku, starved by misery and loneliness. You need to find a way to survive, to carry on. Or the time you'll save. [ her nose crinkles, reintroducing levity and stepping away from the philosophy of it all. ]

[He laughs and nods.]

Yeah, that's been a definite bonus.

[There's a pause and his smile fades a bit, turning more sheepish.]

Even if I still manage to be late all the time.

Well, preternatural abilities don't preclude the possibility of personal failings.

[He nods.]

That is true enough. If anything, it kind of amplifies them and makes them more obvious. Which ... isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you're inclined to try and fix them.

[Some metahumans aren't.]

We all choose what to do with the hand we're dealt. Having something exceptional happen to you doesn't mean you'll make the best of it.

[He shakes his head.]

No it doesn't. And some exceptional abilities have consequences. There was a woman I knew who was in surgery to remove fragments of an explosive from her body, when the particle accelerator exploded. The dark matter reacted with the cells in her body and basically everything she touched turned into an explosive.

And she had no way to control it?

[He shakes his head.]

None that we could find before she was killed. We were trying, we just ... didn't have enough time.

Killed? By her own abilities, or something else?

She was shot. By this guy named Eyling who just wanted to use her as a weapon.

Eyling sounds like an idiot. She won't make a very good weapon for anyone if she's dead.

Technically she was violently resisting him taking her into custody to become said weapon, but I think he figured that if he couldn't have her, he didn't want anyone to.

[ Rey nods as though it's something she's familiar with—people being treated as something you can own, something you can destroy rather than lose. ]

So you're well familiar with the struggles of Shadowkind in this world, then. It sounds as though they're similar to the humans you've described that were augmented by this ... event.

[He nods in agreement.]

Yeah, that all felt really familiar. And it's not fair - people shouldn't be treated like that, no matter how these things happen to them.

Some people will do whatever they can to seize and hold power, no matter who it hurts. It's not right. But it's not surprising either. [ not anymore. ]

[He shakes his head.]

Unfortunately it's not. But that's why there's people like us to try and stop them, right?

[ she still doesn't quite think of herself in that category—hero, knight, resistance fighter. but when prompted to examine it, she supposes it's true enough, so she nods at barry's assessment. ]
