[ Castle repairs are still well underway, so there's that ever present remaining air of tension in the wake of the attack, but nevertheless it's the holiday season and people want to celebrate.  Any and all holiday season things can go here! ]

Sort of? It's more that it cooks up. But that's what leftovers are for anyway. Unless you're super wasteful and just throw it away. [ she makes a distasteful face. THERE ARE CHILDREN STARVING IN AFRICA, CAROLINE. ]

People throw food away?

Yeah. It's really a horrible practice and super wasteful. They could use it for compost or make it into pet feed or donate it to shelters or something, but that would take too much time and effort for most people.

[ Rey was grown before she saw enough food to actually fill her stomach. It's hard to imagine having such quantities that it can freely be thrown away, tossed aside, wasted. ]

It's a small comfort to know not everyone does it, I suppose. [ still hard to imagine tho. ]

France has this whole initiative to take their restaurant or grocery food at the end of the workday and donate it to shelters or reuse as like, dog food.

I just don't understand how it could need to be donated in the first place. There's so much of it in the first place, why would anyone be without?

Wealth distribution is screwed up.

[ She thinks of Unkar Plutt, holed up in his stall with all those portions, handing them out while he sat on a cache of space-worthy ships. For all her time there, she'd been able to rationalize the corruption with scarcity, but now that she's far enough from it to be more objective, she just nods. ]

Yeah. I guess there are always some who have it easier than others.

Exactly. It's messed up, but what can you do?

That's why we're here, isn't it? To help people who need help and can't find it anywhere else?

I just wonder if it's enough, and if we really are doing all we can.

In that case, I guess you just... do more. [ that's not really a solution and caroline can't say all of the stuff she did in school wasn't mostly because it looked good on her college applications.

she strains the pasta, feeling ill equipped to help rey. ]

[ It falls flat, disheartened, and she takes a seat at the bar to watch Caroline work then. ]

We had something like this on Jakku. It was this powder. You boiled it to make bread, but by itself, the powder was inedible. [ She touches one of the raw noodles in the bag, tapping it on the countertop to test its fortitude. ]

Powdered bread? [ her nose scrunches up as she gathers the jar of sauce and frozen meatballs i forgot about, swirling some olive oil around the pasta so it won't stick. all of this is happening. ]

Was everything made from powder or just the bread?

Just the bread. We didn't eat a great deal else there— meat from the animals that could survive on the planet.

[ her nose wrinkles up because something tells her they had to slaughter them for themselves, not buy them all neatly packaged at kroger. but it does help explain rey's incredibly slim frame. well, other than an eating disorder. ]

You'll have plenty to eat here. And variety. And fruit!

I've learned that I love fruit.

[ She'd first had it on Takodana, and while the fruit on Earth was of a different sort, she decided quickly that its exotic nature had a certain allure, even though it seemed so alien. ]

And I'm sure the same will be true of what else you have here.

Hope so because-- [ she sets a finished plate of spaghetti and meatballs in front of rey like TA DA! ]

Thanks. [ Her eyes go a little wide like wow that looks like a lot of food. She's still not used to it. But she will grab a fork and start digging in because she never learned table manners like waiting for the cook to get her own food and sit down. ]

[ caroline doesn't care -- she's used to matt and tyler so ha! manners. she finishes a plate for herself before sitting next to rey and twirling some noodles around her fork while creeper watching her to see if she likes it. ]

so like it's safe to say this is a big success.

but a few bites in, Rey groans and sits back, hands on her stomach. ]

How can anyone eat so much of it!? [ it's so filling compared to what she's used to that her stomach doesn't even have room for a normal person serving. ] I'm stuffed!

Yeah, carbs are filling. But they're great for sustained energy so you can [ win the big game! ] have a ton of energy for doing... stuff. If you wanna do stuff.

[ She nods, like that reminds her of stuff. ]

Thanks. Next time, I'll try it myself. [ She stands up, carrying her plate to the sink to rinse it out. ] There is something I should get back to, actually. I need to get a better idea of how the databases work here so I can search them for signs of my friend.

'kay. [ that reminds her that maybe she should call elena, but she feels... weird. right now she just gives rey a wave. ] Call me if you need a hand with the food.
