[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.  This takes place after the Knights have returned from Dimitris' wedding.

[ The worst is knowing she's right. It's not anything Kali's doing, it's Alex's voice in her mind, making her wonder if there's something else to the fact that she's here at all. Skye hates that, doubting it, reaching for something like this. She takes another two jabs at the punching bag (atk 25, 19) and sends it swinging with the force of the blows. They seem more natural, fueled by frustration like that, than the awkward, stilted blows she was laying before. ]

You're criticizing. And hovering. And — [ She drops her hands. ] And it's fine. Sorry. [ She shakes her head. ] It's not you.

[felidity]

[ she immediately frowns, but tries to push it away with little success (will save 7) as she backs up a few steps. ]

I was trying to help, not criticize.

[hacker]

No. Yeah. I know. [ She shakes her head, turning away from the bag and taking two paces towards Kali. ] Kali, I— I'm sorry. It's not ... You're fine. I'm just on edge.

[felidity]

Is it about Ward still? [ 'cause she'll still murder him. like right now. ]

[hacker]

No. [ A beat. ] And ... yes. [ She huffs out a breath, shakes her head. ] It's complicated. About a lot of things that I just can't explain right now, but Kali, I ... [ She tries to rally her guts, draws a breath, plans the plunge, and ... wimps out (will save 7). ] Forget it. I'm sorry for snapping.

[felidity]

[ that makes little to no sense to kali, confusion obvious as it flickers across her expression before her head jerks in a nod. ]

Okay. I'm gonna... [ she gestures to the bench against the wall, slinking over there. ] Water break.

[hacker]

[ She tries to take it out on the bag. Distract herself from the bleak disappointment in Kali, the injury she'd found apparent in her friend's face, but it does no good. She cares too damn much to let it stand. Skye stills the swinging bag and stands there, palms fixing it in place for a moment while she gathers her wits about her. Then she turns, strides over to Kali, and takes a deep breath to start ... and not stop until she's through (will 19). ]

I can't shake this feeling like ... like I'm going to hurt you because you feel something for me that I can't give you. And it's not because I don't care about you, Kali. I do. [ She crouches in front of the bench, earnest gaze fixed up on Kali in a way that reflects true, reverent emotion. ]

But that's exactly why I can't give you more than this right now. And maybe I'm reading this wrong and Alex was just being an idiot and you don't want more, but I ... I don't want to stick to just not talking about it and hoping that it doesn't come up or hoping that I'm wrong because I can't stand the thought of hurting you.

[felidity]

I didn't ask for more. [ her mouth twists in a frown, shoulders hunching in discomfort that stems solely from trying to explain how she feels and knowing she might not fully grasp her own feelings. she's pretty sure the way her chest tightens is something like rejection though. ]

Alex was right. I do like you. [ there's no unease in admitting it, same old straightforward delivery, honest and plain, devoid of shame. all she's really worried about is that whatever alex said might steal away her friend, but since skye assured her that not even death can do that, she feels secure enough to continue without consequence. ] And I might want more, but I know that's not what you want: you're not in the market and even if you were... You're my best friend, that's all I want.

[hacker]

[ She lifts a hand to cover Kali's, squeezing it with an effort to reassure and not much thought put into whether or not that's crossing a boundary in a way that she specifically said she didn't want to do. ]

Everything that I do for the Knights, every minute I spend here, means nothing without you, would never have happened if it weren't for you. I just don't want to lead you to believe that there's a chance for something that I can't do right now.

I mean, if things change, if there's ... a chance for me to be me, and be with you, and you still want me? Then that's then. But you shouldn't wait for it. Because you deserve so much better than that, than what you'd have with me.

[felidity]

[ part of her wants to protest that skye shouldn't be the one deciding what she deserves or not, but she isn't sure enough on that aspect to attempt. feelings are hard enough without adding her abject failure at nuance right on top of it.

instead, she nods, hand still under skye's, attempting a smile that falls flat. ] Okay.

[hacker]

I'm sorry. [ She sighs, lowering her head for a moment. ] I know that doesn't help right now. But maybe someday, it will.

[felidity]

It's okay. [ it doesn't make her want to kick alex any less, however. she was perfectly fine knowing all of this without having to hear it from skye because it was like schrödinger's cat: there was no possibility of rejection or, even more terrifying, no possibility of acceptance.

maybe it had been silly of her to even have that hope and lack thereof simultaneously. she was made in a lab, she had her emotions tortured out of her and then programmed back into her when they became useful. her resurrection had done enough to convince her that she had a soul, but that didn't make her any more of a person than she was when the knights let her in. maybe she was just always meant to help and that's all. ]

Really. As long as I've got my best friend, that's all that matters.

[hacker]

You do. I promise, you do.

[ For as long as Kali will have her. Skye drops her hand, though, and somehow when it falls away, there'a distance between them. ]

[felidity]

[ well this sucks and kali chooses to completely ignore what just happened because that is a great coping mechanism. ]

Anyway, like I was saying, you have to breathe into the punch. It's like when you're firing a gun and you breathe as you depress the trigger -- same concept, except you're the gun and your hand is the bullet.

[hacker]

... Yeah. [ Skye looks a bit like the wind has left her sails, but she nods, understanding that it's about what Kali needs—which is to disengage—right now, and not her. ] Yeah, that makes sense.

[felidity]

Logan is very good at being hit if you want a person to aim at, especially a moving person. And I think he would do it if you said I asked.

[ kali's pretty sure that he likes her because she's adorable. ]

[hacker]

Yeah? How's he for company?

[felidity]

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

[hacker]

I should clarify that I'm functioning with a low bar here.

I like him, but he's sort of. [ what's the nicest way to put this? ] Surly.

Prickly exterior, I can handle. It's prickly interior I'm worried about.

Oh no, his interior is metal.

[ Skye's silent for a moment like this is some metaphor and I'm going to figure it out but no she's got nothing. ]
