[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.  This takes place after the Knights have returned from Dimitris' wedding.

[ Skye hesitates, brow furrowing, but she slowly comes to nod. ]

Yeah. Yeah, I mean hard to say no to the guy with super strength. [ She moves out towards the open area of the mat. ] What's SHIELD?

[recruited]

[ Steve moves over to the mat and considers how to explain SHIELD. They're not an easy subject. They have--layers. ]

An organization I used to work for. I quit. [ He just glosses over it. ] I head up my own team back home.

[hacker]

Why'd you quit?

[ She doesn't let it go. Dog with a bone. ]

[recruited]

[ Steve pauses for a moment on his end of the mat. Trying to decide if he can delicately skirt or just say the truth. ]

Back in my time I was fight an organization based inside the Nazi party. Called HYDRA. They infiltrated SHIELD somehow in the modern day despite the fact that they seemed gone. We took out their leader, but they kept growing. Basically they ripped SHIELD apart from the inside.

[hacker]

[ Skye looks deeply and viscerally unnerved by the notion that something like that could happen—a Nazi organization hiding in something designed to protect people, the kind of organization Cap would work for, and she lifts a hand to cover her mouth slightly as she swallows down the shock of it. The problem with a situation like HYDRA is that it makes you question everything, everyone. ]

And what became of SHIELD? [ She frowns. ] You don't think ... You don't think something like that could happen to the Knights, do you?

[recruited]

[ It was a concern that Steve had. He discussed it with Sydney on their blind date. Right after he stumbled into her telling him about her boyfriend being murdered. They had similar run-ins with evil organizations infiltrating the ones they worked for and duping them. She understood his concerns about the Knights suffering that. ]

They were seen as the enemy because of what HYDRA did. They fell apart. I broke away and took down what was left of HYDRA inside of SHIELD. [ He looks at her for a moment. ] I don't think any organization is safe from something like that.

[hacker]

Yeah, but what's the answer to something like that? I mean, if they got you to join them, SHIELD must have been doing some real good, right? Making a difference. And we know the Knights do—just look at Andres. I mean, is it worth the risk, that it might go wrong?

[recruited]

They were doing something really good. They were keeping the world safe. [ Even if he didn't agree with a lot of Fury's methods the work was still sound. He knows some of it wasn't for the greater good though. That's when it all blew up. He wishes it could have gone differently. ] Ultimately? Yeah. Everything can go corrupt given enough time. Maybe it won't always, but the ability to exists. We just have to make sure it doesn't.

[hacker]

Got any super secret tips you're hiding on how to do that?

[recruited]

Keep your eyes open. Pay attention. If something doesn't feel right in your gut then--look into it. Get the facts. Never just blindly do something.

[ Steve steps forward. ]

[hacker]

Wynn gives the orders around here. I don't think anyone has all the facts. Isn't a good Knight supposed to follow them?

[recruited]

Following orders blindly doesn't make you a good Knight. If I had just listened to orders blindly I never would have saved four-hundred captured men. I'm not saying just constantly buck authority Just--be smart.

[hacker]

Four hundre ... You must be a real treat at dinner parties.

[recruited]

What's that mean?

[ These stories are totally normal, Skye. God. ]

[hacker]

It means that sometimes, even I wonder if you're actually a real person.

[recruited]

It wasn't really a big deal. I mean all I did was get the escape started--they sorta got themselves outside.

[hacker]

How many people went in with you?

[recruited]

No one. Just me. Everyone sort of just wrote them off for dead because they were captured by the enemy.

[hacker]

So your argument here is that one guy swooping in to save four hundred when no one else was going to isn't a big deal.

[recruited]

To be fair I went there to help a friend. [ He just doesn't remember who. That's blank. ] I think someone would have done it eventually. It was the right thing to do.

[hacker]

You think that because you're the kind of guy who does the right thing.

[recruited]

[ Steve shrugs and rolls his shoulders. ]

I don't know. I think everyone wants to do the right thing. It's just hard to find it sometimes.

[hacker]

That's what I like about you, Steve. You can see the worst parts of people and still hold onto that idealism. [ while it could sound patronizing from anyone else, skye manages to sound commiserative. ]

[recruited]

Some people think that's a weakness.

[ He tries not to let it be one though. Steve's seen the worst humanity has to offer. Genocide. He's waded through the bodies. Through the muck and the grim. He's done dirty work. Captain America wasn't all flash and smiles. ]

[hacker]

Clearly those people have never seen the kind of thing that would suck the idealism right out of them and had to hold onto it.

[ Skye will fight those people. She has had to fight tooth and nail to keep her optimism and warmth and empathy in spite of what she's been through. Fuck those people ten times. ]
