Classic. [he snorts a little.] Look, my sister Nat was obsessed with that fucking movie. There was a period of time where we could never get her out of the tub because she decided she was a mermaid.

That's cute! [ no really, that is adorable. it may not be lila's favorite movie, but she is a girl. she had little mermaid dreams when she was small. ]

Yeah, my sisters are adorable. It runs in the family.

[he nods, knowing what she's getting at.] My oldest sister, Tori, she's psionic, too. But not like me. She influences emotions. Nat and Sonja are ... normal, as far as I know.

I'm pretty sure regular run of the mill humans are the abnormal ones. [ lol no, that's a lie. freaks are still the minority. ]

Yeah? What's your thought process on that?

Maybe I wanted to see if you'd bullshit some more.

Maybe I just don't like the idea of normal because I can never live up to it. [ that is the opposite of bullshit. ]

Normal's like the American Dream: it's been dead for years, but people are still trying to hype it like nothing's happened.

Don't you ever want to be normal?

Used to.

And you... grew out of it? [ this is slightly similar to their earlier conversation about whether they wanted to go back to the family life, but it's a little different. because lila doesn't want to be normal, per se, but she wants to be able to do normal things. like sleep. and date her boyfriend. and have thanksgiving dinner. ]

Basically. I realized it was something that wasn't ever gonna happen for me, so, yeah, I guess. I grew out of it.

I still want it, is that dumb?

[his heart breaks for her a little because he sure knows how that feels. even if he's ... dead inside now.] ... No. No, it's not.

[ she thinks it probably is and she looks down at her lap as her will save crumbles. but at least she changes the subject as she feels the pressure in her chest that signals her anxiety, pulling her hand from alex's to fish around in her pocket to pull out her bag of pills. ] When I was a cat, Barron kept me in a cage. That's why I'm claustrophobic.
