[Fortunately for Sam, this time around, when Dean arrives at the Castle? Sam hears about it.

He's made friends since back then, ones that know their relationship, and know that he would want to know. And they're right, because he's been waiting for this awhile, wants to know what took his brother so damn long to come home, wants to know if he'd being avoided on purpose or...no, it's probably on purpose.

Well, that was going to come to an end in a hurry. He doesn't particularly want this conversation, because it'll probably be uncomfortable and angry and horrible, but it has to happen. He can't sit on any of this forever.

Not when he's not the only one who knows.

So that afternoon, Dean will hear a rather...forceful knock on his door, following quickly by a voice.]

Dean, it's me. Let me in.

[Because he's not going away. Sorry, bro.]

[Something occurs to him as he takes another pull off his beer, though he hesitates a moment before saying it.]

Look, I...don't know what you and Buffy talked about but she doesn't know about what she didn't hear from Robin.

[For the most part, anyway.]

I'd like to keep it that way. She doesn't need to get caught up in the rest of this any more than she already has.

I'm not sure just how much she knows, or don't know. But I think you're gonna have a hard time gettin' her to back off this.

She knows whatever you told Robin. Apparently they were friends on the other side of the Veil. I don't think he would have kept anything from her.

[He sighs.]

Michael. He talked to her about some destiny of hers. [ he rankles at the word, looking away as he names names. ]

Michael? As in the archangel? She's talked to him?

[He just...looks a little thrown for a second before he just...tries to accept that.]

Considering I've been talking to Lucifer's daughter, Michael's not that much of a stretch, huh?

[So deadpan. Everything is terrible.]

I knew you were talking to an angel, but I thought it was a different one. One called Castiel?

[ that shuts him down in a second. sam knows him well enough to see just how much even the mention shakes him, which is telling because there are very few people who dean lets in that close. period. ] Cas.

[Yep, backing off that subject for now. He knows what happened to him.]

Then when was Michael in the picture? This wasn't recent, was it?

Cas was the one who set me on my quest, but the other ones butted in when they felt like it.

Michael was the one who convinced them all I might be the one who could do it. Cross the big finish line.

[He's getting into the one thing that Sam doesn't know much about, so...have fun with getting Glasya's version, Dean.]

The Quest where the Angels get to see how much suffering one person can go through without dying, right? The one where they have to lose everything and come out the other end grateful for the opportunity?

[Yeah he just...bombed his will save. S-so angry.]

[ oh hey, with a really high wisdom check and a really poor will save, that anger's back here too. ] ... Just how much talking have you been doing with this devil broad? Because for somebody who wasn't part of this, you sure as shit sound like you've been drinking Hell's Kool-Aid enough to get an opinion.

It was about proving what mankind was capable of. Resisting temptation, standing up to evil, not folding in the face of this shitty world of ours.

And yeah, it was bullshit, alright, fine. But it wasn't just the Angels playing that game. It was all of 'em. They don't give a crap about us, except as far as we can prove something that they already wanna believe.

What is it they want us to prove?

[ he doesn't answer for a long moment. but when he does, his response seems to say why. ]

[He lets that hang in the air a moment, brows furrowed in deep thought, but in the end he just shakes his head.]

So, what, one side believes we do, one side believes we don't, and everything else is just...a game to see who wins?

It's a metaphysical pissing match, is what it is. A bunch of supernatural beings who don't even go here tryin' to act like they know what's best for us.

What happens when one of them wins?

I don't know if they even know. Heaven had six hundred and sixty six chances to pass one of us through. If they hit the magical number of the Beast without doin' that, they saw Hell wins the bet.

Sounds like that would make both sides...pretty desperate.

[With one finally so close to winning, and the other trying frantically not to lose.]

You better believe it. They had to be, to go thinkin' I'd fit the bill.

...there's nothing wrong with wanting to be a hero. It's what they're doing that's wrong.

Yeah, well they can have it. Cas said sometimes decades go by without a Prospect popping up. By the time the next twelve roll out, we'll be long gone.

Maybe that sounds cynical, or like giving up, but unless I find a way to break their little system before I kick it, I'm not sure what else to say.

I should've known. You can't save everybody. Doesn't work that way. Never has.
