Hi. [ Kate arrives abruptly, leaning her forearms against the desk and smiling, more friendly than just polite. She casts a look across the books, and the nail polish, equally interested in both judging from the time she devotes. ] So, I'm new and I'm wondering what's the best way to get to London from here? Is there a train or something?

We rent out cars.

[ Lydia slides the brush back into the nail polish bottle, giving it a few turns and then shaking it. She sets it aside and uses the hand that doesn't have wet polish on it to pull open a desk drawer, producing a set of keys. ]

It's not that long of a drive. Nothing in England is.

[alsohawkeye]

Oh, nice. [ She eyes the drawer of keys and then collects the ones Lydia's offering. ] I'm not sure I've been here since I could drive.

[ This would be her cue to leave, and she twists that way but then back, taking a risk on Lydia's mood and a nail-polish-based leap to ask: ] So, these credit cards. Any idea how much personal shopping we can get away with? I haven't actually gotten paid yet but I've only owned like two pairs of shoes for about a year now and I'd really like to fix that.

[immuno]

Sweetie.

[ She shuts her eyes briefly, shaking her head and propping her elbows on the desk so she can lean forward, careful of her nail polish. ]

I've been here a month, and in that time, a doppelganger stole two knights' identities at once, got locked in our dungeon, and escaped. Another knight wound up kidnapped and is currently being held by the worst government in the world, and a good part of New York City's Shadowkind population just walked into the Hudson River to drown themselves.

I think the credit card statements are the last thing on Wynn's mind. [ She smiles sweetly, batting her eyelashes. ] If you're really worried, just ask your mentor to come with you and buy a few things.

[alsohawkeye]

[ Welp. Probably should've seen that coming. Kate listens patiently, and then returns that smile in kind. ]

Sorry, I assumed that a place that can spare someone to sit at the front desk while all of that's going on instead of just setting up an automated phone system must really care about the little things. But you're right, that's probably not it. Thanks for the keys!

Now you know better.

[ Lydia seems unaffected and unswayed by the rationale. ]

But by all means, if you're still paranoid, don't risk the audit.

[ It was intended to be less rationale and more veiled insult and the lack of reaction has Kate a little nonplussed. Are they not doing a bitchy-while-smiling thing here after all? Or is Lydia just a ninja at it? Unsure, she shrugs. ]

I think I'll live.

[immuno]

[ Whatever, gurl. Lydia settles back in her seat, but as she does so, she glances behind Kate, realizing that ... no one is with her. Her head tilts slightly. ]

You're going alone?

[alsohawkeye]

Maybe. [ Yes. ] Why?

[immuno]

Don't you have a mentor or a recruiter that you could bring with you? Someone must have you brought you here. [ Not that Lydia's never been shopping alone—in fact, she goes alone a lot. Allison's not a huge shopper. But Kate's new. ]

[alsohawkeye]

Not really the type. [ Them or Kate herself, Lydia can take her pick. Kate's mouth curls into something not quite a smile but vaguely reassuring in intent. ] I know London, and I can handle myself. Unless there's some more specific threat I should know about I'm sure I'll be fine.

You did hear the part about the doppelgangers, right?

[ She shakes her hand out to try and get the nail polish to dry, officially irritated with the fact that it's a handicap of sorts. ]

They can change their appearance to look like anyone else. One could grab you and sneak right back in here with your face, and we'd never know the difference. It's happened before. You should consider the buddy system.

[alsohawkeye]

[ Kate tilts her head, now, a little skeptical. ] Would anyone be able to tell if the person I brought with me was a doppelganger? Or if I already was one right now?

[ It's not a terrible point though, and okay, she is considering the buddy system. But, ] Look, my mentor is from olden timey land or something and basically the only other people I've met so far are a sad drunk and some sort of hunter dude who is probably also a sad drunk. I don't think any of them are going to come watch me buy jeans.

[immuno]

[ FTR Alanna dresses in 100% modern clothes, she just still carries a sword/etc. She's much more adapted than some! But keeps with her own traditions. ]

Right now? No. But you just got here, and you came back with the group in New York who was friends with her right around the time she bailed. Timeline doesn't add up. [ Shrug. ] Bringing someone with you is more for your benefit than anything else—the people who got replaced were kidnapped and tortured or something. At least if someone else is there when you're taken, chances of us figuring it out go up.

[alsohawkeye]

[ Shhhhh details she just wants to goooooo.

There's a tightening at the joint of her jaw, and Kate exhales a breath that clearly kind of wants to be a sigh but isn't allowed to get there. Lips press into a smile instead. ] Okay, got it. I will very seriously consider taking someone along. [ She even means it this time. ]

Good.

[ She's done her good deed for the day. She settles back, vaguely pleased with herself, and continues painting her nails. ]

[ The temptation to be petty in retort is huge, so it's a good thing that her will save roll was 21 (assuming that I did any of that right). Instead of knocking nail polish into Lydia's hair or something dumb she pushes her smile brighter for a second and exits. ]
