[ It's mid-afternoon and Dawn already looks ready for sleep. She has to make an effort to stay busy while in the Castle, to remember that there are other things she can and should do aside from hole up in the library and read and make notes until her eyes feel like they're going to give out. There's things like sunshine and training and other people she could interact with.

In fact, she's about to head out for something or other that isn't entirely important when she passes the front desk. ...and then slowly backtracks to peer at the books stacked there. ]

I have been looking for that everywhere. Except right here, obviously.

[ She clams up with a sort of wELL YOU CAN'T HAVE IT expression. Her hand drops to the top of the book, holding it down on the stack. ]

I was told we didn't need to officially check anything out to borrow from this library. I'll put it back when I'm done.

[ Dawn wavers between fighting over a stupid book and holding her hands up in protest. She at least holds them up to show she isn't going to grab it, sheesh. ]

Whoa, hold on. I didn't say anything about checking out or wanting to take it now. Enjoy, browse at your leisure, totally. I was just saying that I had been looking for it.

[ Lydia eases her hand back, sizing Dawn up. Ugh. She really hates this trying to be nicer to people thing. Rolling her eyes quickly, she sighs. ]

I can probably be done by the end of my shift here if people stop bothering me. Where should I bring it?

Yeah, gee, living in a castle filled with people, hard not to be bothered once in a while.

[ It's one of those backhanded comments that could either be taking offense or commiserating. Take it as you will, Lydia. ]

I'll probably be back in the library by then. [ Pause. ] In fact, if you text me if you are done with it, I'll definitely meet you there. A lot easier than trying to find my room.

[ Pulling out her phone, Lydia passes it over (unpasscoded) for Dawn to put her number in. ]

I can do that.

Awesome. [ It sounds genuine, at least. She taps her name and number into the contact entry, saves it, and scrolls up to get Lydia's number in return. Then she grabs her own phone, inputs the number, and then smiles. ] I'm Dawn. Dawn Summers. You're... ?

Lydia.

[ She takes her phone back when Dawn's done, checking the number and then hitting the lock button. ]

Martin, although I think I'm the only one. [ She's in high school, where last names only matter if you share a first name with someone else. ]

Lydia Martin. [ Smile and a nod, and she adds the name to the phone number. ]

I'm the only Dawn, but not the only Summers here. There's Buffy, too.

What kind of name is Buffy?

[ ... ] It's a diminutive of Elizabeth, likely because of how a little kid would pronounce the last syllable. It started showing up on popular names lists in the 70s, which totally could have been because a character on a tv show was named that. Or the 70s were a time where more casual things were in vogue.
