Do I look like I need help? [ she rocks back on her heels, hands still in the drawer, and looks up at will, curious. almost as if huh at were a genuine question and not patented teenage snark. ]

[he looks at her like bitch pls.] I'm not sure that's a question you actually want answered. People tend not to like the response.

[he gives her a quick once-over — and gets a spot 17, which is actually the worst he can get without crit failing so. i guess his heart is really not into playing reindeer games with lila rn.] Probably. [he takes his glasses off to clean them with the edge of his shirt.] You have self-inflicted scars.

I do. Anyone with eyes can see that. [ she doesn't bother to hide them, it's not like she's ashamed. usually though, no one thinks to point them out. she continues to rifle around in the drawer. ]

How did you darken the one on your neck? Ash? [knowledge: idk weird fucking shit 20 total]

Yeah. Normally they're darker, you're supposed to open it up and repack it. [ victory, she straightens up holding her prize in her hand, it's just a pair of sunglasses, and kicks the draw shut with her heals. but now she's curious about this guy so she just perches on the edge of the desk. ]

[o-oh she's not going away. so he talks ... to his blank notebook instead of her. what is eye contact.] You see that more in African cultures than Western. Sometimes people pack scars with the ashes of deceased loved ones.

I'm pretty sure this was just the pages of Dostoyevsky. Or, like, Camus. [ she doesn't remember so she's just makes shit up. call the police, she doesn't give a fuck. ] I suppose I could just rip it open and clean it out to find out.

You don't remember?

No. [ she doesn't seem to mind. it's been a year and a half, the only things she minds not remembering are her parents' names. ]

Mhmm. I grew up in Manhattan, just not this one. Which I guess is lucky considering it means I don't give a shit about anybody in New York anymore.

I was six when 9/11 happened. I'm used to catastrophes befalling New York, but you can't expect me to feel personally invested in all those people. [ she does though -- because alex is from this new york and so is felicity, but she's invested in those people. ]

I didn't say anything. Everyone reacts differently to tragedy.

No, but you had this look. Like "how interesting".

[he looks up, looking at her but still not making eye contact.] It was an interesting response.

I suppose. [ the phone rings but she picks it up for him, chattering in french before abruptly hanging up with a sassy "Merde, il pleut." ] But an overwhelming amount of emphatic compassion would be just as interesting. And probably false.

[o-oh well ok. he's not exactly going to fight her for the phone.] It would probably reek of overcompensating, yes.

So far, though, you haven't really answered my question.

Do you look like you need help? Yes, I did. I said probably, strongly leaning towards yes.

Why? [ she still looks just idly curious. look, she knows she needs help, usually no one else notices. ]
