[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of the first half of the month. Because not everyone is into parties, ok.

Also, following the promotion and squiring parties at the beginning of the month, Wynn will be taking any willing Knights back to Andres Isle to further reconstruction efforts there.   There's plenty to be done - and an election to gear up for, to find out who will rule Andres Isle!

[In some miracle of miracles, David actually can hazard a guess what Amara is doing (wisdom 20 total). He doesn't know what she's doing specifically, but if it looks like magic and smells like magic ... ]

He's on Andres. You'd be better off picking up the phone.

[Yeah. Not making him feel better. But he'll just let her do that for now and come back to investigate this for himself later.]

We were. Now we're mostly focusing on helping the island rebuild.

There usually is with war. No matter how careful any side is, innocent people are always going to get hurt. The most you can do is just try and minimize it as much as you can.

As we did, when we saved those people, and returned them to their homes.

[Part of David wants to squint slightly at that "we" but they wouldn't have gotten out of there without Amara, and he can give credit where credit's due.]

Yes. Exactly like that.

I suppose that was the right thing to do.

[His eyebrows go up at that. His tone is dry, but not confrontational.]

What's that supposed to mean?

Nothing.

[No, not nothing. He's terrible at bluffing and he crit failed that so he clearly wasn't even trying.]

You just make it seem as though there are better things we could be doing then helping people who need it.

Maybe I just don't think other people's business is our own.

All that is required for the facilitation of evil is for good men to do nothing.

[The quote may be redundant to the point where it's a cliche, but the point of it is important, and how much David actually believes the words (diplomacy 24).]

Those people were suffering under Sarandis's rule. They were forced to live in squalor, given minimal rights and some of them were even experimented on to the point where they were subjected to mind control, because they were Shadowkind. They were different, and to Sarandis that made them ... disposable. It's true that we could have said it was "their" business, and just turned a blind eye and pretended that nothing was happening to them the way the rest of the world seemed to, but that doesn't solve the problem. That doesn't stop the evil. And just because you didn't participate in it doesn't absolve you from the blood on your hands for ignoring it.

[He's quiet for a moment.]

In fact, in my experience, all that really makes you is a coward. Because you can condemn people for the evil deeds they do, but words only mean so much. If you don't act then you're not really saying no. What you're actually saying that it's okay, so long as it doesn't happen where I can see it.

You have no idea what it is to wield the power we do. We could shape the world to our ends, if we so desired, decide what was right and wrong for everyone within it. Does that mean we should? That it is for us to say what is an evil, and to expunge it as we so see fit?

So instead you do nothing?

[He shakes his head.]

You're right. I don't have your magic. I can't bend the world to my cause. But there's nothing subjective about enslaving people, or treating them like they're garbage. There's nothing subjective about enslaving someone's mind with magic and taking away their ability to choose for themselves.

[The tone there is a little personal, because that's what happened to him. He would have fought for her regardless, if she had given him the choice, but she didn't. She turned him into a shell of himself and maybe that's why he overcompensates the way he does - why situations like Kat's and Amara's hit so close to home, because the woman who's name he can't remember used his love and turned it into a bastardization of what it should have been.]

Those people aren't asking for a magical fix. They just needed someone to stand up for them and show them that they had a choice.

You're asking me not to use my strengths, while chastising me for not doing all I can. I imagine to those running Andres, what they did seemed the right course of action. Just because you believe your eyes to be clear, doesn't mean they are, any more than theirs.

Is there no in between? You either do nothing and pretend the rest of the world is beneath your notice, or you take away their choices and remake the world in your image?

[He grits his teeth.]

My eyes may not be clear, but at least I'm standing for something. It may not mean anything to you, but it means something to me.
