Perched at the edge of any civilized lands, the small lumber town of Falcon's Hollow has always had to rely on itself to solve its  problems.  Now the hacking coughs of the sick are heard throughout the town.  The plague has come to the Hollow, and the town is ill equipped to stop it on its own, particularly given its resistance to magic.

That's where the Knights come in, sent to assist a local herbalist in putting together enough supplies to mass produce a cure.

Just keep an eye out. Frickin' Jurassic Park out here. [ they keep pushing on without being further molested by mosquitoes, at least. sitting squat at the foot of an imposing mountain, a ruined monastery comes into view between ancient gnarled trees. made of simple stone blocks, worn smooth with the passage of time, the stout building is falling apart. sections of the slanted shale roof have crumbled. weeds and wild thorn plants run rampant across the field leading up to the place, leaving only the slightest indication of a path that ends at the ruined front doors. beyond, an overgrown yard sits in shadow.

the old path that leads up to the ruins stops about 50 feet from the monastery, passing between a pair of stone statues. while one of them is little more than rubble, the other is relatively intact. the five-foot-tall statue is incredibly worn, but it can still be made out as a dwarf holding aloft a great stone hammer. moss and creeper vines cover most of its surface. a few lone razorcrows sit atop the tower and caw down at them as they approach. ]

[ abigail keeps both her eyes out, drawing one of her knives and keeping it drawn as they move forward. (spot 21) when the reach the ruins, she glances up. ]

It's like Thor's particularly stout brother.

[ abigail would notice that the vines have grown over an inscription on the base of the statue. ] Come on. Not the kinda place we wanna get stuck in at night.

[theminotaur]

[ just gonna clear the vines so she can read the inscription. but not out loud because she's sheltered and stunted, but she's seen charmed. ]

[ it says "All Praise, [this part defaced]" ]

Hey, do dwarves worship some kind of ...blacksmithing god? I think that's this guy. [ seems legit to her. ]

Good for him. [ logan currs so many currs. but anyone else who wants can make a knowledge theology or history check. ]

Naw, it's not a god. He's a king, so it's gotta be from a time of the last great dwarven kings in the shadow world.

[He...read a book on dwarven kings I guess (knowledge 18).]

Means we should be in the right place, though, yeah?

All praise, what's-his-face. [ said with a tone of at least it will be over soon. ] Is this king known for booby traps? I'm not looking forward to falling down another pit.

[grimrot]

[Grimrot pauses to examine the statue, and just in case she can get anything else her knowledge history check was a 19.] I would assume yes. It's better to expect them than be proven wrong than the other way around.

[And just to follow her own advice, she looks around for any signs of traps (spot 28).]

[ there's nothing visible here on the path, and logan leads them into the yard, where tall grasses and chunks of stone debris have all but overtaken the enclosure. off to one side, a wooden stable has collapsed into a mound of rotting timbers and moldy straw. the outer wall on the east side has also collapsed, leaving a ragged hole. three doors exit into this yard - a pair of double doors to the east, a single door to the north, and a lone door leading into the squat tower in the southeast corner. grimrot's spot check allows her to see a well hidden in the northwestern corner of the yard, lying next to which appears to be ... a body. ] Just watch where you're stepping.

[grimrot]

[Grimrot gasps, and picks her way carefully towards it.] Oh, no, there's another body.

[So many dead people. :( ]

Of course there is...

[He mutters bitterly. So helpful today. :')]

[ abigail looks over, but doesn't move to follow, letting grimrot field that. ]

Anything on it?

[adamantiumed]

[ logan moves that way to look it over as well, with a grimace. ] Not much left of it. [ and it's true, the body looks partly dismembered. ] Maybe something got hungry. [ also so helpful. he starts picking his way across the courtyard towards the pair of double doors, which seem to be the main entry of the building. beyond the broken doors is a small dark hall, littered with mounds of debris and nature. it's clear that a narrow path winds inside, still. there are doors to the left and right, a hall that branches right and one that branches left, past said doors, and at the end of the entry hall is another set of busted down double doors. ]

Left, right, left, right, straight? [ too many options, tbh, she looks up at logan like please decide on a route. because he's apparently invincible, so she's going to stick close to him and use him as a human shield. ]

[ he pushes open the first door on the left, claws extending from one hand, which he keeps held aloft, as they glance inside. there's a very small room there, where a few moth-eaten hats hang on pegs. a single soiled hat sits on the little table inside.

with a nat 20 spot check, logan moves inside, and bends over in one corner, coming up with a mushroom in hand. ] Not enough, but it's a start. [ he hands the mushroom to abigail to store in her pack. ]

[ she makes a face, flashing back to the story will told her about turning into a mushroom planter and shuddering. she shows it to miles and grimrot before she safely stows it in her backpack. ] And one room down.

[ logan pushes over to the other door, across the small hall, but the handle is stuck. with a nat 20 strength check, that is some fucking overkill, and he actually rips the door off its hinge, and drops it on the ground. they can see that an ancient wooden chair had been propped against it on the other side. the room beyond is dark and smells deeply of dust and decay.

the mummified remains of a dwarf wearing the garb of a blacksmith lay in the center of this small room. he has the shattered shards of a glass vial in one hand, and a scrap of ancient parchment in the other. ] Looks like we missed a real party.

[ carefully, and without taking her gloves off because shit might be poisoned, abigail creeps forward to pry the note from his hand. (str 16 if needed) ] This is getting very Mines of Moria...

What's it say?

[As he basically peers over Abigail's shoulder.]

[ the note is written in dwarven ... DOES ANYONE HERE SPEAK DWARVEN??? grimrot probably does. if so, she can translate the note, which reads: "Forgive me, dark father of the forge, my toils shall never be enough." ]

Uh... [ uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. ] I have no idea. It's not in English.

[grimrot]

[Grimrot doesn't, but she takes the note anyway and squints at it for a moment (linguistics 24).] It's in Dwarven. It appears to be a... plea. "Forgive me, dark father of the forge, my toils shall never be enough."

[She glances up at the others.]

Poor man. Appears he was right.
