Of course not, that would be silly. [She glances over at him and raises her eyebrow.] Normally this is the part where you introduce yourself back.

Topher Brink. [he shoves his hands in his pockets and shrugs his bony shoulders almost all the way up to his ears.] I got thrown off the polite conversation track.

Yes, it seems a lot of people are surprised to hear my name, but most people are named similarly when I come from. [At least she's stopped introducing herself as a princess. It's no longer accurate, and people find that even more dubious.]

[Topher, you're not helping the matter at all.]

[The Candy Kingdom, but she's learned her lesson about sharing too much about her past. She continues to cling to her name, but other details she keeps quiet.]

You know, it'd be a lot easier to get scientific research done if my colleagues didn't insist on mocking me the second they heard my name.

You're a scientist? For realsies? What field? [at least he's not being a douchebag male about it- he seems legitimately interested... actually more interested than he was when he first walked in.]

Bioengineering is my specialty, but I've studied everything.

[And she means e v e r y t h i n g. She might look like she's in her early 20s, but she's had centuries to study, and she hates wasting time.]

[he looks mildly skeptical if only because... he has his own particular wheelhouse and sticks pretty intensely to it. he shrugs it off, however. there's more brainy people here than he's used to and he kinda likes it even if it means he might not be the smartest person in the room.] Nice. I pretty much stick to my guns in neurology and computer sciences, and every now and then stick my toe into something new. I mean when you're dealing with a world that has magic and psionics and all that jazz, you gotta be willing to adapt.

Yes. "Magic." [She rolls her eyes and makes finger quotes as she says the word.] People are fond of giving up once they're confronted with powers they don't understand.

[andblockbuster]

[he leans on the table.] Look, I've lived here my whole life, and magic's real and I've had to accept that, but there's some kind of biological imperative to it.

[monosaccharide]

I've seen what people call magic, both here and in my own time. [She shrugs a shoulder.] It did not impress me. It's just lazy people refusing to analyze their own powers beyond a surface level.

[andblockbuster]

Wow. [look at his amazed expression.] Finally. Someone with more contempt for lesser mortals than me.

[monosaccharide]

I don't have contempt for anyone! [She touches her chest, eyes widening.] I just wish people would stop calling things magic instead of seeking a more logical explanation.

Well, I mean when the Veil closes, it just goes poof. I pretty much use that to mock the whole system, and avoid the explainy bits. Science is forever, magic goes away, etcetera, etcetera...

[monosaccharide]

That's... actually a pretty sweet way of looking at it. [Though she still enjoys the out-explain the wizards and their stupid magic outlook.]

So long as we're agreed that science is far superior.

Uh... Duh?

[even though he witnessed the power of divine magic earlier with Kali. shhh.] Of course it is. That part isn't even up for debate.

Good. [She nods, giving him a smile.] You seem all right, Topher the Human.

[andblockbuster]

Uh... It's just Topher. We don't... specify by species here. Or anywhere in the civilized world. That just seems weirdly specific, and it's not like there's a Topher the Elf or a Topher the Bugbear down the hall.

...I don't think.

...we don't have many humans when I come from. [She shrugs a shoulder.] I meant no disrespect. One of my best friends is a human.

[he's trying hard not to laugh and make the obvious racism/speciest joke, but it's SO HARD.]

Yeah, well... Kind of a majority over here. Privileged majority. If you're a white human male, your life is easy street on a grand social scale.

Yes, I've noticed that. [She scowls.] Do you have any idea how many universities laughed me out the doors? Just because I technically don't have any degrees. Like I couldn't out-science all of them with my eyes closed.

Yeeeeah, you're gonna need every degree in triplicate and a handwritten essay about why you deserve to be taken seriously in the field before they'll even look you in the eye. [he presses the tips of his fingers together and shrugs.] And then there's still no guarantee you'll ever get taken seriously. On the plus side, the Knights seem to be very equal opportunity. I haven't even heard of any wage discrepancies between humans and... I don't know. Orcs. Half-orcs. Whatever we have here.

Yes, and I hear our budget is unparalleled. Which is good. Money shouldn't be a factor in the pursuit of knowledge.

Which is exactly what I said when I joined an organization that turned out to be a little bit evil.

Yes, if this organization is evil, they are hiding it very well. [Which doesn't mean she's totally ruling it out.]
