[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.  This takes place after the Knights have returned from Dimitris' wedding.

... Potential, I guess. [ She shrugs her shoulders. ] I've spent most of my life trying to figure out where I came from. If I ever left the planet, I'd lose any chance of getting those answers.

[starprince]

You mean like... your family?

[hacker]

[ Visibly uneasy, Skye swallows and nods. ]

[starprince]

You wanna talk about it?

[hacker]

Not much to tell. I was just a baby when the orphanage got me. Not much in the way of records to search on, so I've been scraping together what I can over the years. [ her shoulders hunch. ] But this is your therapy session, not mine.

[starprince]

Hey, I was just making a tape. You're the one who took it there.

[hacker]

You were talking about what you'd really missed. So? Is that it? Family?

[starprince]

[ hrngh ] Yeah.

You could say that.

[hacker]

You can tell me. We all have our own issues, our own baggage: you don't have to hold it back with me.

[starprince]

[ rude skye

he looks down, fiddling with the cassette player ] ... You know that tape we almost left in your van? The one I brought with me?

[hacker]

Yeah, a bunch of old songs. [ Her eyes catch the cassette player. ] Where's it from?

[starprince]

No laughing.

[hacker]

[ Skye touches her fingertips to her forehead, her chest, and each shoulder in turn: she may not be religious, but growing up in an orphanage filled with nuns taught her what a real promise looks like. ]

I swear.

[starprince]

... My mom made it for me.

[hacker]

Your mom? Like, before you left Earth? [ after a beat, she realizes, ] Wait. Why haven't you tried to find her? She could still be alive somewhere.

[starprince]

She's not. [ his shoulders slump a bit, and he directs his attention to the machine again, fiddling with it idly ] She was... sick.

The last time I saw her, in the hospital, was the last time I was going to see her. It was right after that, right outside, that they came and took me. [ he nods a bit up at the ceiling, making it clear what 'took me' might have meant in this case. ]

[hacker]

[ Sympathy and grief well up in Skye's eyes as strongly as if she were feeling Peter's loss and fear herself. She shakes her head, trying to muddle through it—Skye can't help but empathize in situations like these because she's always wondering what it will look like when she actually finds what she's looking for. ]

I'm so sorry. I— I had no idea. I'm glad you managed to hold onto it all this time.

It was the only real link I had to what life was like back here, so I've been pretty damn careful not to lose it. We've seen some times together.

[hacker]

So was that the first time you heard it since you left? No way aliens have cassette players.

[starprince]

Actually, I had my Walkman with me when I left. Kept it running the whole time.

[hacker]

'80s batteries must have been something else, if that's true.

[starprince]

Well, I was in space. We have our ways. Recharging some low-tech batteries wasn't a big deal if you knew the right people.

[hacker]

I don't even like going as far back as DOS. I can't imagine having that level of backwards compatibility.

[starprince]

Well, luckily you don't have to.

Either way, the point is, I guess there's some... nostalgia value.
