[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok.   Characters participating in the following missions are asked to wait until their missions have concluded before tagging into things that take place chronologically after said missions:  Dead of Winter, Curse of the Homo Magi, Ravenloft, Shadow Bermuda, and City of Blood  If you aren't certain if that applies to you, please ask!  Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.

Who, me? Oh, I'm a newbie around here, technically. I got squired a month ago.

[She tilts the package in her hand towards Skye in offering.]

As a rule? Please and thank you. [ She reached out for the popcorn, getting comfortable. ] So how'd they suck you into drinking the Kool-Aid?

Well, one, this isn't too far off from what my life was like back home. Two, my Mom's been working here for like....four decades. Pretty easy decision, honestly.

[She tilts her head.]

Why are you here, if you think it's kool-aid?

[hacker]

Sort of ran out of other options, wanted to see what the hype was about. Kali said you're good people. I'd like to believe she's right. [ She flops onto the couch, getting comfortable and looking over. ] So your mom works here, but you're not legacy like Gatewood? Where's back home?

[bagsthem]

Pretty much the best people, if you want my opinion. I'm sure some of us have their skeletons, but who doesn't?

[She's not sure who Gatewood is, being a noob, but she gets the idea.]

Home is through the Veil. My Mom came through way back when. I apparently took my time following her. [She shrugs.] The Veil can be weird.

[hacker]

But you both came through it. I mean, neither of you were from this side.

[ It sounds like a weird question still, but at this point, she feels the need to confirm. ]

[bagsthem]

[She shakes her head.]

Nope, we both worked for a place called Sanctuary. Kind of like this; secretive, all about protecting Abnormals or containing them if they were too dangerous. Whatever we needed to do to keep the peace. Anything not human was a big secret, though, unlike here. And when I say worked for, I mean my Mom was kind of in charge of our branch.

[hacker]

So your mom was your shadow world's very own Wynnefalshond.

[ She accepts that with a steady nod. ]

It used to be a secret here, too. The Veil wasn't always common knowledge.

[bagsthem]

Something like that, yeah.

[Huh, she hadn't even really thought about it, honestly.]

I guess that makes sense. Explains all the prejudice, anyway. It's part of the reason we wanted to avoid letting it all out. Too dangerous for everyone, honestly. There's no taking it back here, though.

[hacker]

And there shouldn't be, even if we could. No matter how dangerous it might seem, it's important. People don't have to live in the shadows anymore, don't have to hide what they really are. We need to fight to make it safe. Not try to hide them away in secret.

[bagsthem]

Say that to the extremely fragile species that could get wiped out if the ph of their water is slightly off. One asshole finds them, and they're extinct. Or the psycho creatures we've had to lock up that could murder an entire crowd of people without breaking a sweat.

There's no protecting anything if it just ends in a bunch of bodies.

I'm not saying that fighting for the rights of Shadowkind and getting rid of misinformation about non-humans is wrong. I wouldn't be here if it was. But what we did back home wasn't wrong, either.

[hacker]

I'm not saying what you were doing was wrong. I'm saying we shouldn't be going backwards. You were trying to protect them in your own way for where that shadow world was. But we're here. We're out in the open. And that's one step closer to being accepted.

[bagsthem]

Yeah, I know. It's just hard to totally leave home behind. Things are just so...different here.

Not better, not worse. Just different.

[hacker]

It makes sense. [ She nods. ] You get used to living one life for so long, and then suddenly, everybody expects you to just turn around and live a totally different one. Like a switch flipping. It's not that simple. Letting go never is.

[bagsthem]

[She nods back.]

At least it helps that the job itself is similar enough. It's more the politics that have changed, and that was never really my shtick anyway.

[hacker]

Yeah? Sounds lucky. What about your mom, how's she adjusting to the politics?

[bagsthem]

Oh she's fine. She's been with the knights since the 70's.

But you said she came through the Veil before you. You don't look that old. How does that even happen?

[bagsthem]

Yeah, she came through the Veil forty years before I did, but we apparently left our dimension around the same time. Not sure how that happened, maybe the Veil just sucked me up and kept me for awhile? [A beat.] She also, uh, doesn't age.

[Her smile is awkward.]

It's this whole thing. The Veil is weird.

[hacker]

So it teleported you forward in time, and your mom ... she just ... [ Skye shrugged her shoulders. ] Is immortal?

[bagsthem]

More like it shoved my Mom back in time. Maybe. Like it was definitely not the 70's back home.

[She shudders.]

Probably? She can die, just like anybody, but if she ages then it's happening really slow. She only looks about 10 or 15 years old than me, but she was about 250 years old when I was born.

[hacker]

And you guys aren't some kind of Shadowkind race? [ Just checking. ] It's just— I mean, you look human, but that doesn't always mean you are around here.

[bagsthem]

Not technically?

[She makes an odd face, as if she wants to go on but stops herself.]

She'd probably talk to you more about it if you asked her, but it's not really my story to tell. Her name is Helen Magnus - she's usually working in the labs in the Hoard wing.

[hacker]

The Hoard. [ Skye nods. ] Pretty sure I'll be spending wicked time down in front of those screens, so I'll see if I can catch her. Thanks.

She's the best person to go to if you have questions about different types of Shadowkind too. Her research is pretty extensive. [She nods.] You're welcome.

[And then her Mom will know she made a friend(?). Double win.]
