The Rock - Harry Chapin
WHO ||Deryn, Alice, Sara, Frankie [closed]
WHAT ||The Knights investigate a mysterious transmission...
WHERE || New York
WHEN || Late March 2016
HOW || Actionspam
[A garbled, static-filled transmission, encoded in a Shadow language, has made its way to the Knights attention, seemingly linked to a series of similar transmissions last year. Equipped with a decoding program by the Dragon's Hoard, the Knights head to a set of railroad tracks that were mentioned, to try to see what this is all about... ]

Yeah, didn't you notice your phones or...radios or whatever, going off with some weird message? We're probably the only people who actually know what it said so.... [He looks down the track impatiently, then glances at his watch.] Mabel, we've only got like eight minutes now.

It's not worth it, if they know about it, they should be helping us. Unless they're behind it. [They may or may not be cops, but honestly, Dipper doesn't particularly trust cops. As far as he's concerned, they're on their own, as usual.] Let's just go.
[To... stop the thing on their own, of course. They're not... actually gonna leave.]
no subject
[The inference being, we kind of need them so maybe we should be nice.
Moving towards the tracks now.]
Hey - don't... go running off, it sounds like we all want the same thing here. You guys have some details we don't and we have, numbers and some areas of expertise on our side. [Hands open at her sides as if, imploring them to consider the benefits.] A Hummer full of people you said?
no subject
Who are you guys, really?
no subject
We're with a group called the Karthur Institute. [Extending the card so... Dipper and Mabel will have to get off the tracks to look at it.] We're investigating these transmissions, just like you it seems.
no subject
The Karthur Institute? Really? Oh my god.
[He nudges Mabel, barely able to restrain his excitement as he steps forward to take the card.]
I have so many questions and theories and do you guys intentionally hire phone people who are absolutely terrible at their jobs because it really seems like you do and what do you actually do and--
[He pauses (will save 20), and tucks the pad of paper back into his pocket, though the pen stays out, his thumb clicking it on and off almost nervously.]
...we need to save people first. But I'm not letting you guys out of my sight until I have some answers.
no subject
[she wraps an arm around Dipper's shoulder and tugs him against her shoulder.] Anyway, I'm Mabel and he's Dipper. We're kinda pros at this.

[ The quiet one standing in the back spoke up finally. To Mabel's question. ]
no subject
Uh... [She scratches behind her ear, lips twisting into a grimace until Dipper comments on the receptionist, a knowing smile touching her lips.]
As a rule, no that's just Cheryl. [As if that somehow explained everything. She notably, doesn't even touch the rest of that just yet because... yeah she'll just blame it on the impending disaster for now. That works.]
Frankie Matera - [Distracted.] You said, 8 minutes? You didn't happen to decode the rest of the message, did you?
no subject
He pulls his notebook from his pocket again and flips back a page.]
"In ten minutes, a hummer H2 will approach these tracks from the north. You must stop it from crossing the tracks until after the train passes. Do not fail."
[He flips the pad shut, looking up at the group.]
And that was like two minutes ago, so we should probably get going and find that hummer and whoever's meant to be stopping it.
no subject
Alright then. Let's do that. [Instead of chatting about stuff more now that they've got the information.]

Sooo... you're definitely the front for a secret organization, right? I've been tracking you guys all over the world and whenever you show up, bad stuff happens. And you're very good at covering your tracks. Suspiciously good.
[He's not totally sure if they're the cause of the bad things or trying to stop them. The fact that they're here working with Dipper and Mabel now is either a good sign, because it means the Karthur Institute is indeed good guys, or a bad sign and they shouldn't have interfered with this message to begin with.]
no subject
Okay, we can't let the Hummer guys get killed, but can we at least handcuff 'em to the steering wheel until they agree Hummers are awful. And you have handcuffs anyway! Might as well use 'em... Wait why do you have handcuffs if you're not actually cops? No judging, promise.

Maybe bad stuff happens and then we show up. Or maybe there's a lot of bad stuff that doesn't happen because we do. [Nat 20ing her sense motive to pick up on his uncertainty.]
Suspiciously good... [Bobbing her head.] But you made connections? [There might be some inadvertent ego stroking there but really. It's hard not to be impressed, okay.]
I can disable the car when we find it at least. [Piping up from her conversation with Dipper.]
no subject
It doesn't hurt that his ego is extremely susceptible to stroking. He straightens and smirks a little.]
Eh, you're not the first secret society I've dug up. Just takes patience and digging. [He raises his voice slightly to weigh in.] And we're not disabling or handcuffing anything before we figure out what's going on no matter what they drive, Mabel. The people who sent out the code wanted the car stopped, remember? For all we know it's transporting a heart for transplant or something.

You think the person behind the transmissions might be trying to help? [Head cocked to one side, Frankie clearly not considering that possibility until now.]

[Like Dipper said, he hasn't decided if he thinks they're good guys or not. The only reason he's pretty sure they're not the ones the message is for is that if they were, they probably would gotten the whole message without Dipper's help. But even if they're working against the same people, they may not be on the same side.
But for now, at least, they seem to have the same goals.]
