[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok.   Characters participating in the following missions are asked to wait until their missions have concluded before tagging into things that take place chronologically after said missions:  Dead of Winter, Curse of the Homo Magi, Ravenloft, Shadow Bermuda, and City of Blood  If you aren't certain if that applies to you, please ask!  Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.

You are encouraged to start your own threads and tag around, and feel free to threadjack into any on-going threads that aren't specified as 'closed' in the subject lines since people can enter into rooms even in the middle of what's going on. WE ARE BIG ON THREAD-JACKING HERE. This isn't to say you don't get to learn a variety of different things, regardless. But people tend to specialize based on their sects.

What's on the docket for the standard Knight package, sect notwithstanding? Kali and I haven't gotten started yet. I think we're waiting until it's all ... official.

Well, your mentor is there to help you ... orient, basically. They evaluate your performance, talk to your mission leaders to see how you're doing in the field, and they help make a recommendation as to whether or not you should stay. Every mentor is different - personally, I like to give them a mission or two, see how they handle it, and then I'll talk to the section head of their choosing about making them a full knight.

But if Kali's going to be your mentor, then she'll have to figure out her method of assessment but you'll definitely have to go on a mission.

Performance evaluations. That all makes it sound like they expect us to come in fully trained. There's no ... program for that?

What? Like fight training? Training is worked out with your mentor knight and done on your own time. They have a big weapons orientation for new knights, but since we all have different specialties, you can base it on what you need.

[There's a pause as she thinks.]

There's a knight in the Hide - Sir Levin? He's usually more than happy to do one-on-one training with squires who need it. But if Kali is mentoring you, I'm sure she'll pick up the slack in that department.

Yeah, fight training. Weapons, tactics, knowing what to do when people are trying to shoot at you. Did you know there are teenagers here?

[She chuckles softly.]

Yeah, and some of those teenagers are scarier than some of the experienced veterans. Not everyone is as they appear to be. And they need a place in all of this just as much as adults do.

[hacker]

I guess. But getting them to fight, turning them into operatives. It just seems ... [ She shook her head. ] I don't know, Malina.

[bredinthebone]

[She takes a deep breath, before shifting to look at her more.]

It's not something we take lightly. Or more to the point that Wynn does lightly. And I don't think it's something these kids do lightly either. They know what they're getting into when they sign up and all of them have earned their position here.

[She pauses.]

Some of them are just looking for somewhere to belong, and winding up with us is better than winding up in Sarandis's laboratory or some other Shadowkind horror show. Some of them would have been dead if it weren't for the Knights intervening and they have nowhere else to go. Plus, not all of them are on active missions all the time. Wynn is very selective about who he sends where.

[ She nodded, processing. It took a lot to digest all of this, the enormity of it, the weight of what they were doing. Finally, she looked over, shaking her head. ]

Why do you do it? What defined the Knighthood for you, convinced you to sign up and stay? How did you know this was a good fit?

Honestly?

[She snorts a bit because her reason for joining wasn't the best example.]

I joined because I wanted to make sure my best friend wasn't joining some kind of crazy cult. He was dealing with some stuff and I was trying to make sure he didn't do something stupid. I stayed, because it gave me a reason to use my magic that wasn't conning or hurting people. I learned more about how magic works here than my actual magical parent ever managed to teach me.

In the end, I was really just another kid with something to prove, and it backfired on me and I found purpose instead.

[hacker]

Wait. You were a con artist? [ Skye starts to laugh. ] Sorry, it's just all the ... straight laces and rules and checking in with the boss. I didn't peg you for the ex-con.

[bredinthebone]

It was a very long time ago. And technically I wasn't the con. My dad was. He was the one who taught me how to use magic, so all the spells I learned were spells he used to con people.

[She waves a hand.]

I didn't have the stomach for it though. The most I ever stole from anyone was a drunk driver's keys when I was working in a bar, and I gave them back when they were sober.

[hacker]

That I can believe.

[ actual super-mom malina harvey. ]

[She smirks a bit.]

I was mostly raised by my mom. I didn't meet my dad until I was sixteen and it was mostly to teach me magic. His familiar is a literal weasel - I think that says all you need to say about him. But he's my dad. I learned a long time ago that I can't change him.

[hacker]

Is it weird? You being a knight while your dad's ... your dad. [ She softens some, like this is personal curiosity, not professional. ] I mean, Wynn's knights stop people like that. Have you ever wondered if you'd have to stop him someday?

Unless Wynn decides to make it his personal mission to track down every sideshow dirtbag out there? I think I'm pretty safe from having to take him down. He's a snake, but he's not evil. He helps Shadowkind more than he hurts them, and he steals from people who can afford it.

[She shrugs.]

Wynn tends to rely more on the "helping the helpless" angle. I'm more worried about getting a call from him saying he's in jail and I need to bail him out.

[hacker]

While keeping them in the dark.

[ She clarifies with a sigh. ]

I don't know, Malina. I don't know if this is me.

[bredinthebone]

Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. That's why there's a squiring period.

[She leans forward on the counter a bit as she looks at her.]

Look, I know this isn't your usual gig. You're big on transparency and us, not so much. But you're here - might as well give it a shot, and if it's really not you, then you can walk away. No one will judge you for that.

[hacker]

[ She nods, accepting the logic of this. ]

It doesn't happen a lot, though, does it? People coming behind the curtain, then turning away.

[bredinthebone]

[She pauses before shaking her head.]

I'll be honest, what we do is a lot on anyone. But Wynn is pretty good at picking the people who can handle it, after doing it for so long. So no, it doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen. In the end, it's always your choice, and Wynn will respect that.

[hacker]

[ Something in Malina's words placates her, and Skye takes to giving her fidgeting a break. ]

Well. For better or worse, I'm in for the free trial.

[She nods a bit, before taking another bite of her sandwich.]

I think you'll be surprised what you find.

Good surprised, I hope.

[ She says it with a little smile, hunching her shoulders. ]
