[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok.   Characters participating in the following missions are asked to wait until their missions have concluded before tagging into things that take place chronologically after said missions:  Dead of Winter, Curse of the Homo Magi, Ravenloft, Shadow Bermuda, and City of Blood  If you aren't certain if that applies to you, please ask!  Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.

And they were all ... I mean, it was too late for them, by the time you guys invaded?

For many, yes. We saved those we could.

The news all said Sarandis is still at large. Have you guys managed to pick up his trail, do you know anything?

[chessing]

We of course haven't given up looking, but he's been covering his tracks quite well. For now.

[hacker]

No kidding. If he's smart, he's already found someone who can change his face. Scrolls of Seeming aren't cheap, but the guy used to be King. He can't be that hard-up, and there are plenty of governments still sympathetic to his ideas. Just look at Italy.

[dragonsclaw]

A great deal of them, unfortunately. He had plenty of years to make powerful friends, and we've little doubt that one of them is harboring him even now.

[hacker]

Does Wynn have operatives infiltrating the governments you suspect of having ties with him? People who might be harboring him? They've probably got all kinds of anti-scrying magic in place, but their hard channels probably have some kind of chatter the computers in the Hoard lab could get into with a little love.

[dragonsclaw]

We're in a rather precarious situation when it comes to planting operatives, unfortunately, due to a... security leak of sorts last year. Sarandis knows of our existence, and is likely to make certain he has men watching for established Knights. We've done what we can using operatives from outside branches, but there's too much risk involved in using magical disguises of our own, considering that if someone detected them, it might draw undue attention.

[hacker]

What about unestablished Knights? Wynn's obviously been recruiting. He could send over people he's only brought on board after the siege on Andres.

[chessing]

It's too much of a risk for our under-experienced agents. Wynn could no doubt find volunteers, but he won't put them in that position, so he refuses to offer it.

[hacker]

Isn't giving Sarandis the chance to regroup way riskier?

[dragonsclaw]

There are some risks he's willing to take, and others he is not. Recklessly endangering those who have placed their fates in his hands is one of the latter.

[hacker]

I've met the people here. There are plenty of them who'd call that risk worthwhile, who'd gladly offer themselves up. Who's Wynn to stop them?

[chessing]

Someone they trust to weigh the potential dangers and come up with a better way. [ his wording is very specifically chosen to accentuate that it's about the Knights placing their faith in Wynn, not about being restrained by his edicts in this case ]

[hacker]

[ That shuts her up. She studies Jack for a moment, as if resistant to the notion of that kind of untempered trust, but she finally nods. ]

I get it.

[chessing]

Wynn isn't the type to take much of anything likely - given that almost everything he deals with involves the lives of those he cares greatly for. And of the greater world at large.

We have a great duty here, but we can only afford so much recklessness, before the human cost becomes too high. [a beat] Well. "Human", as it were. [ he smiles wryly, breaking the somber mood a little but only a little because ahahahah ofc he's thinking about thomas ]

[ She softens up, sympathetic. ]

You lose a lot of people, doing what you do?

[dragonsclaw]

In terms of numbers, it might not seem like as many as it could be given the dangers we face, but losing even one or two dear friends every few years... Well, that's difficult enough. Inevitable, but never easy.

[hacker]

Totally. [ Skye nods her agreement, half-apologetic for even making it seem like a numbers game. ] It's never easy to lose someone you care about.

[chessing]

If it ever becomes easy, that's when we'll have to reevaluate ourselves.

[hacker]

I always figured the reevaluation line had to do with how you treated strangers, not just the people you care about. [ Admittedly ... ] But Wynn's people seem to have both covered.

[dragonsclaw]

We endeavor to on our own, and we have one another to keep us in check should any of us lose sight individually.

[hacker]

Has that ever happened? Knights ... losing sight. Going bad?

[chessing]

Considering that we work with very dangerous individuals of all sorts, it is rather inevitable that once in awhile, such a thing occurs. Wynn is very perceptive, and a sound judge of character, but he is not infallible, and in the end, it is the fact that he respects our choices, and puts faith in us to take the higher road that affords some the opportunity to take the latter.
