[ Buffy quiets somewhat, glancing askance at Vi. It's hard for Buffy to get a real read on her because she wasn't there through it, and Vi's been so isolated since. Not everyone handles grief the same. Jade had proven that. ]

What if he's not dead? The god, I mean. I know—I mean, I heard you got him out of your head, but ... All of those Shadowkind in New York ... [ She shakes her head. ] And anyone else he wants to make a deal with.

Oh no, he's not dead. [ she doesn't seem too bothered by it, as if it's a fact of life that she knew was true at the start of it. she was never killing malaak'a, she was just destroying the hold he had over her. ] It was a shadow manifestation. I don't think you can even kill a god, especially an evil one, their essences are so rooted in humanity, it's impossible. Evil is always there. Just not in my nightmares anymore. [ she turns into the training roof, pushing the door open with her hip and holding it for buffy but not looking at her. she knows that means luthir died for essentially nothing, they didn't save anything. just vi. to her, in the grand scheme of things, luthir died for something incredibly insignificant. ]

[ Buffy lingers in the doorway, not going in immediately and waiting for Vi to look at her, but she never does. Still, she doesn’t budge as she stubbornly points out: ] But in someone else’s. You could help them.

How? [ she looks up slowly, the expression on her face not the apathetic depression she's carried around for the past year, but a devastated brokenness. she got her soul back from malaak'a and he ripped away her heart instead. she didn't win, he did. ]

[ She steps forward, resting a hand on Vi’s shoulder in an act that feels incredibly brave on her end, because she’s not quite sure what (if anything) might just shatter the delicate pieces of Vi into a million tiny pieces. ]

By being you. Vi, you’ve done what no one else could. You fought him. You won. I know that it’s hard to see it now, and don’t think for a second that I think that it didn’t have its price, but you are a rockstar. Luthir would be so proud of you.

[ except he is dead. so. not proud. but she manages to not say that out loud, mouth twisting into a bitter, resigned frown. ] Blade said it would end in blood and it did. And that was before the deal. I know people want to help Nadia, but I can't do anything. He's not in her nightmares, he's in her head, all the time. I can't fight that.

No. But if it's true, then you can help her fight it—just like you did.

[ She didn't come into this with an agenda, I swear. Motivational speaker Buffy just happens. ]

I can't. [ she shakes her head, face crumbling like she's going to cry, but no tears come and she bites down on her lip to keep it that way. it looks like she wants to say more and she just shakes her head again to stop herself. ]

I don't believe that.

[ She's soft but insistent. ]

If there's anything I know about you, Violet Reedhym, it's that you are capable of so much more than you give yourself credit for.

[ she violently flinches at her full name, slipping out of her grasp (escape artist 29). ] No, Buffy, I physically can't.

[ she falters, blinking and dropping her hands with apparent confusion. she makes no effort to hold vi at all. ]

... What? What are you talking about?

[ covering her face with her hands, she pushes them back into her hair, bow sliding over her wrist and dangling from her elbow. she doesn't want anyone to know because she doesn't want that sympathy to turn to pity. especially if it ends badly. but she also knows buffy can be determined, which is a good quality, just not one she likes right now.

probably why the words come bit out between her teeth in a low, quiet hiss of discomfort. ] I'm pregnant. [ and with a whirl of her long hair, she stalks off into the firing range, imagining buffy will just follow her. ]

buffy sure as fuck pursues after that because this is not the greatest news ??? like she wants to be happy for her but she's having a very hard time doing that because she's pregnant with the child of THE HUSBAND SHE JUST LOST. no wonder she's fucking miserable. ]

No. I don't want anyone to know. [ she sets herself up at a station because she is stubbornly still going to shoot shit now that she's in a mood, but her tone gives away the helplessness she is just overflowing with. ] Des' fucking unicorn friend found it. Apparently he's the mystical E.P.T.

[ That's okay, Buffy's pretty sure that the shooting is going to keep her sane and she fully supports it. In fact, Buffy grabs a crossbow from the rack and starts fitting a bolt into it. ]

You ... found out from a unicorn? [ God that's weird. Okay. Overcoming the weird. Slowly. Her face looks particularly unsettled for a long moment until she finally fights through it. ] Okay, but someone has to know, Vi. Someone who can make sure that you're okay, that the baby's okay.

Myri and Anastacia know. Big mouth unicorn told them. [ it's easier to be annoyed with nick than attempt this conversation otherwise. otherwise = crying. she focuses on the target for a moment, obviously struggling with more words, but it doesn't seem to effect her accuracy even a little bit. (atk 23 & 20 total) ] I don't want to be that girl who lost her husband and that girl carrying her dead husband's baby. In three months when I can't hide it anymore I can be that girl, but I don't want to be right now. There's only so much pity I can take before I start using people as targets.

Yeah, I'm a — Let's not, with the physical violence.

[ She's coming up safely on the side of doing whatever it takes to avoid that outcome. She approaches the lane beside Vi with her crossbow, considering the other girl's face for a moment. ]

I mean, Myri's done this kind of thing before, right? [ Do witchwomen look after pregnant women? She's not actually sure. ] She can take care of you.

Myri has enough to worry about. [ schwing. (atk 19) another pink arrow slams into the target. ] You're going to Andres, that's basically her worst nightmare. [ twang. (atk 27) ] She doesn't need to take care of me, I'll be fine. [ hahah ha do you like her utterly false bravado? ]

I'm ... pretty sure these things involve some medical care. Like check-ups, and tests, and—I don't know. Grown-up stuff. [ I don't know about you, but Buffy's feeling 22 right now. And everything will not be all right. Ever. ]

People do this without western medical care all the time. She's half elf, quarter god, quarter apparent rock star human, I'm pretty sure she'll survive without monthly doctor visits and that weird whooshy sound the monitor makes. [ a sigh pushes her hair from her face, and she lowers her bow a bit, brushing her fingers across the strings. she really should have learned to silence it on her own since she doesn't really have anyone else to fix it for her now. it's such a little thing, but it makes her heart feel hollow. ] It's too much to think about now. Everything is too much. I don't even know if I want her. Which is fucked up, right? It's like a spec the size of a piece of sand and I know I'm supposed to be attached, but I really just want to trade it in for Luthir. And I know I'm supposed to want to help Nadia because she was in the same position I was and she made the wrong choice, but I can't. Because even if I don't want this, Luthir did and she's all I have left and I can't, I just can't lose that. And Jesus Christ, all I want is a fucking glass of wine.

[ sorry, buffy, there are tears now. ]

[ There’s no hesitation in the way Buffy steps forward, gently resting her hand on the bow to take it from Vi and set it across the counter. With it out of the way, she envelops the other woman in her arms, pulling her in close and just giving the tears a moment to settle, giving the words a moment to come rushing out.

It feels natural to raise one hand to smooth over her hair in a silent soothing effort. ]

Then, we’ll get you a glass of wine. [ I tried to roll to see if she would actually randomly know if it’s really perfectly fine for women to drink occasionally during pregnancy but INSTEAD SHE ROLLED A 4 which means Buffy doesn’t even actually know that it’s discouraged bc she is so pregnancy-dumb. ] And we won’t say anything else about what you’re supposed to do, because there is no supposed to. You do what you can. You do what feels right. If you don’t want this, Vi, you don’t have to go through with it.

[ It kills her to say it, but somebody has to, and judging by Vi’s frantic distress, no one has yet. ]

[ it doesn't take much to make vi cry on the best of days and she's pretty sure buffy doesn't even know what she's like when she's happy, which is a thoroughly depressing thought but she's already stuck in the grand canyon of depression with a steal trap door welded shut over the top. any resolve she had at all crumbles the second buffy puts her arms around her, nearly collapsing into sobs. it's the same with finnick and myri, she can be fine but the second either of them moves to comfort her the flood gates open.

she can be strong only so long as other people allow her that illusion, once it's broken, no such luck. ] I just want Luthir back.

I know.

[ And it breaks her heart that she can’t give that to her, because out of everyone, Vi deserves a little bit of happiness. Buffy holds her tight, holding her up and letting her cry without interrupting. She turns her face to kiss the side of Vi’s head, shutting her eyes for a moment. She needs to get it out, Buffy figures, and there’s a lot to get out.

Pretending to be strong when she’s not feeling very strong is an impossible feat; Buffy knows that from experience. She casts her gaze upward, a longing, pleading kind of look towards the ceiling. They need something better than this. Vi deserves better than this. ]

I wish that I could give him back to you.

[ she doesn't say anything in answer, nodding against buffy's shoulder. she knows she can't have luthir back, she knew it the second she tried to heal him and nothing happened. she knew before that, the moment those black veins started spreading across his body. she'd lost luthir the second they stepped into that nightmare. no matter how much she wants him, he's the one thing she can't have.

it doesn't make it any easier to deal with.

when she feels like she can breathe again and she can stand on her own she steps back slightly, gently disengaging from the hug and pushing her hair back from her face. she rubs her eyes with the back of her hand, shoulders shaking with those toddler hiccuping catch up breaths. ] It's going to kill Elena when she finds out, that she wasn't here.

[ and vi is genuinely more distressed for elena than for herself. ]

[ Her hand continues to smooth over her hair in a soothing, steady rhythm. A smile flickers across her lips, just briefly, before falling again. This is not a happy smile. It’s grim and resigned and reluctant, but fond of where Vi’s priorities lay. ]

You let us worry about Elena. You worry about you.

[ She’s never done that enough; Buffy doesn’t expect that will change so suddenly now—even if she wishes it would. ]

And know that no matter what happens, no matter what you do next? We're on your side.
