[Fortunately for Sam, this time around, when Dean arrives at the Castle? Sam hears about it.

He's made friends since back then, ones that know their relationship, and know that he would want to know. And they're right, because he's been waiting for this awhile, wants to know what took his brother so damn long to come home, wants to know if he'd being avoided on purpose or...no, it's probably on purpose.

Well, that was going to come to an end in a hurry. He doesn't particularly want this conversation, because it'll probably be uncomfortable and angry and horrible, but it has to happen. He can't sit on any of this forever.

Not when he's not the only one who knows.

So that afternoon, Dean will hear a rather...forceful knock on his door, following quickly by a voice.]

Dean, it's me. Let me in.

[Because he's not going away. Sorry, bro.]

[ there's no answer for long enough to make sam wonder if maybe he's not in his room right now. but finally he speaks up, tense, guarded, from behind the door. ] This ain't a good time.

[familybusiness]

[Oh good, off to a great start.]

I'm not sure any time is a good time when it comes to you.

[A long beat passes before:]

Don't make me pick this lock.

[ there's another beat, but it's shorter this time, and then the sound of the lock being undone.

the door is yanked open hard, and dean stands there glaring at him, entire posture tight. he looks, for all intents and purposes, like he's cornered and none too happy about it. clearly he's less interested in having a chat that's on sam's terms and... not in the middle of a crowded room. ] What?

[familybusiness]

[So he comes up with the first thing that will grab his attention that won't be fucking damning, especially if anyone around is listening or...in the room with him that he can't see..]

I can see them, Dean. [It's not hard to know what he's getting at.] When were you going to tell me that they're freaking everywhere?

[likedillinger]

[ the defensive mask slips as he stares at him, hand still on the door. it's easy to see the thought process play out in his eyes: wondering if this is a game, considering what it means if it's not, feeling the pained weight of realization that he's possibly left sam to deal with something like this on his own. he hesitates, but finally shoves the door open further, turning to walk in. ] Get in here.

[familybusiness]

Thank you.

[The words come out incredibly forced, like it should have taken this much to get so little, but he follows his brother inside, where he's...suddenly distracted by the decor.

He looks around for a second, raising a brow at the...pink.]

What were you so busy doing? Shopping online at Pier One?

[He's such a brat.]

[ dean throws him a bitchface expression over his shoulder as he moves to swipe a beer bottle off the dresser, which has left a nice ring there. ] It came this way, alright? [ he takes a swig, and then keeps it in hand, as if he needs it to face this conversation. ]

[familybusiness]

[Nice matching icon, Dean.]

Whatever.

[There's a slight roll of his eyes, because if he'd come back to London for two seconds in the last two months, he probably could have done something about that but noooooo.]

I'm guessing it's too much to hope that you have another one of those.

[likedillinger]

[ another beat, and then he nods to the other side of the bed.

the one thing he's done is install a mini-fridge. it's full. ]

[familybusiness]

[Oh. Well. That's healthy. :|

But he's not commenting considering he's....grabbing one, twisting off the top and pocking it before he finds the closest surface to sit in.

He takes a sip, steels himself, and spits out the words.]

I know what happened, Dean.

[likedillinger]

[ the words snap him into focus, and the look he gives him is sharp, suspicious, but cautious. and skeptical. ] You do, do you.

[familybusiness]

I know a version of it, anyway.

[He looks down at the ground, into the opening of his beer.]

I did some research, found a couple old police records, but when I dug deeper... [He pauses, clearly severely unhappy, his hand tightening around the bottle briefly.] ...I found Robin Wood's name, so I went out to Chicago, and I took Buffy with me.

[likedillinger]

[ tension gives way to outrage pretty quickly over here. ] You went with Buffy? [ not surprise that she was there. that you were. since he... knew the first part. ]

[familybusiness]

I asked her to go with me. Let me guess, she said something to you.

She told me about her little chat with Robin. And neglected to mention anything about you dragging her into it.

[familybusiness]

Well, good, because if you're going to be pissed at anyone about it, at least it'll be directed in the right direction.

Maybe I would have known what I was dragging her into if you'd give me anything to work with.

[likedillinger]

She told me Robin told her what you did. You heard all that? Cuz if so, I'm not exactly sure how you can stand there and be pissed at me for not wanting to open up to you.

[familybusiness]

Because you're not the only person this affects, Dean. I didn't do those things, and I had no idea the extremely, frankly, terrifying scope of this mess.

Look, I get it. You think this is some big trick, and I can tell you til I'm blue in the face that it isn't. I can tell you that I'm scared, and freaked out, and confused as hell, and you might be able to shrug it off.

But if I am the fiend that was your brother, then I already know all this crap. And if I'm not, then you let me walk into all this crap by myself.

[A beat.]

I didn't talk to Robin, Dean. Buffy did, and I got Robin's story from her. I talked to someone else.

[He's gonna....drink this beer now.]

[ he looks ready to say something else, almost chastised by sam's words until

that last part.

that stops him dead, and there's the sound of his beer hitting the dresser again as he sets it down, affixing sam with an anxious glare, all his worst fears written on his face. ] Who? [ he manages to work so much dread into just one little word. ]

[familybusiness]

[If Sam looked uncomfortable before, it increases like...a million fold. But he soldiers on.]

She told me her name was Gayl.

[Which implies that he...knows that's not her name.]

[likedillinger]

[ yeah, this is his worst nightmare. right here. he's living it.

it's not just anger in his eyes, it's fear, and disappointment, and something all but snapping as whatever speck of hope he'd managed to hold onto for things being different after all this time breaks inside him. ] Sam. [ there's a warning threat in his words, his voice hard and demanding. ] What did she say.

[familybusiness]

A lot, Dean. She's said a lot of things. Sometimes, I wish she would take them all back.

[Like this moment right here. He doesn't want it.]

I don't even know where to start.

[likedillinger]

[ ahahaha his voice goes gruff with pain and rage, and his next words burn with barely disguised hope warring with full blown horror. ] Do you know? Sam! Do you know what she is?! [ please just tell him you don't just say you didn't know you still don't know, that you were tricked, it's all he wants to hear. ]

[familybusiness]

She told me. Eventually.

[So a little from both columns. He didn't know, not right away.]

Eventually? [ he spits the word out, not happy with this is going, where it's already gone, what he can't take back that she's already poured in sam's ear. ] And what'd you do, Sam, when you found out the truth?
