a r o u n d - t h e - c a s t l e

If anyone is looking for Malia, they might find her in a few different places. One spot might be the library where she's actually trying to figure out a few of the things that she still hadn't figured out back home. Math was still really hard for her, but she's determined to at least try. If she's not in the library, she's in the kitchen eating. Otherwise, people can find her just about anywhere they might want to. She likes to explore and in a place this size, there's plenty of things to find.

She knows that he doesn't remember her. That she needs to respect that and that this is not how things are back home. It's just difficult for her. Malia has tried to manage this on her own, but she'd come to rely on him. She's doing really well, but the one thing she hasn't figured out is how to make her pillows into the right shape so that she doesn't miss him as much. It's late and she's been trying to fall asleep for the past five hours. It's wrong, she tells herself as she wanders the halls, but maybe he does know her, but it's like in the cartoon movies where they just need to be reminded. He's easy to find. She could find him anywhere.

She opens the door and moves quietly across the floor until she's standing in front of his bed. It's different than his room back in Beacon Hills. It looks like it belongs in a magazine - but so does her own room. She misses the board and all of his strings. The posters on the wall and the chess board. She doesn't over think it, because she's been over thinking it the whole way over here, she just climbs into his bed and makes him into the little spoon that she knows fits against her.

[He doesn't notice right away. He's a pretty sound sleeper, but it's when she slips into his bed and wraps her arm around him that he stirs. It's slow at first, just a shift and a groan before he moves his arm and feels...

...another arm?]

Uh...

[He's frozen in place, trying to look over his shoulder to figure out just who it is.]

I can't sleep. [It might have helped if Malia had even, remotely in the slightest mentioned just how well she knew Stiles earlier.]

It's easier with you, though, so don't move so much.

[He got a really great wisdom score so he's actually picking up on just her voice.]

...Malia?

[No, it's not making it make anymore sense, though.]

Yes! [She sounds so happy that he's figured it out, as if maybe he's remembering something.]

All I need is to sleep. [You know, so don't worry about her trying to lure you into sex or anything.]

Okay, but- [He's still so confused.] Why in here?

Because I'm used to sleeping with you. [She murmurs it as she tries to get comfortable. It takes her a moment to realize that her earlier excitement was out of line. He definitely still doesn't remember her.]

Wait, what? Does that mean that you and I..?

[Okay... she has a feeling like she messed up somewhere. Which, okay, so this isn't as simple as she thought it might be.

Sitting up she frowns and then stands, moving to get up off of his bed.]

I'm sorry. It's very difficult to know things and then not want to say the wrong thing and I've been making progress, but it's not like this sort of thing ever came up in Beacon Hills. There wasn't a 'This is what you say when no one remembers you.' lesson.

[ alice is flitting through the library for some reason or another when she catches sight of malia's math books. (spot 22) ]

Math, huh?

It's the worst. [She frowns.]

I don't even know these people, but I'm supposed to care about their monotonous habits. [It's those story problems - Matt wants to travel to Ohio etc etc.]

Ah, word problems. Lemme guess. [ she sets her book on the table and leans over to get a better look, but it's upside down to her so. no dice so far. ] Someone is driving one direction going 60 miles an hour and a train is going in the opposite direction at 200?

[Malia nods.]

I don't understand why they don't just use the internet to find out which way is fastest.

That's a good point. But the point of word problems, even though they're awful, is to connect math to the real world and learn how to translate regular English back into math terms.

But I won't need this. I have the internet. It's on my phone, even.

What if your phone has no service? It's not so much the math you need to know, it's how to solve problems. If there's a disaster and you don't have enough supplies, you'll need to know how to ration them or take just enough from one med kid to supply the next one without taking too much from the first.

Oh, I know how to survive. [Leave the weak and injured behind.]

I lived in the woods for nine years, but that's not what this is trying to teach me.

The moon isn't quite cresting yet, but it's just on the edge. Cora can feel that tug for the moon just as well as every other werewolf, but being born one and working on that control all her life, it's a little but easier to push it back down again. It's been six months, give or take, since she lost it after arriving in London and she's made it back to her equilibrium again.

So it's with that in mind that she's leading Malia out to the woods, hoping that they would be able to find a way to help her get some control without locking herself down all the time. It's not a healthy way to deal with things permanently, even if it's effective.

"So I haven't asked - were you born a shifter or bitten?"

[animalistic]

"Born," she replies. She feels like she should tell her - tell her about Peter, about not knowing her father and how even now she still feels like she doesn't know him, but her focus is on trying not to let herself lose control so at least that distracts her from all the things in her mind.

"I didn't know and I shifted in the car. There was an accident." She frowns deeply, clenching her fists at her sides as she tries not to let her anger at herself take over. "My mother and sister died."

Cora wants to ask how she didn't know, why her parents didn't tell her, but that isn't really the important thing by the time she hears the end of it. She knows what it's like to lose your mother and your sister, and the survivor's guilt that goes along with it, but now isn't really the time for that. She swallows it down and focuses on Malia. Tonight is about helping her and making sure she doesn't hurt anyone else.

"Okay, well - that's good." There's a beat where she realizes how it that sounded. "That you were born, I mean. It's easier for us - our instincts are already wired for it, we just need to practice."

Malia nods, trying to focus on the story. It helps. Maybe. She's not really sure.

"I was adopted." It probably helps make a bit more sense out of her shifting in the car. "Before the accident. When I was born." Her fist clenches at her side and her eyes flash a bright blue.

"How much further do we have to go?"

Cora stops, glancing over her shoulder and listening to see if there's anyone around (listen 26). From what she can tell, there's no one out and around - just Mellie lumbering off in the woods not too far away. She then turns back to her with a nod.

"Yeah. This should be good." She then turns to face her again. "Did Scott teach you how to shift without the moon?"

[animalistic]

She shakes her head. "I -- I can't fully shift anymore. I haven't been able to since he forced me out of my coyote form."

Malia had been more that just upset with him for that. He'd taken the choice away from her and made her face a world she wasn't prepared for. She extends out her hands, showing her the claws that have already produced themselves. "It just happens."

Oh-kay. That's a lot more work than she thought. But it at least gave her a basis to start, and a full moon was as good a time as any to figure out your anchor. In fact, it was usually the time that gave you the most motivation.

"When it does happen, how do you pull them back in?"

Since she obviously doesn't walk around with coyote claws out all the time.

"I breathe. Or Stiles helps me focus." Really it's not something she thinks about too often. It just happens and then she has to deal with it.
