Perched at the edge of any civilized lands, the small lumber town of Falcon's Hollow has always had to rely on itself to solve its  problems.  Now the hacking coughs of the sick are heard throughout the town.  The plague has come to the Hollow, and the town is ill equipped to stop it on its own, particularly given its resistance to magic.

That's where the Knights come in, sent to assist a local herbalist in putting together enough supplies to mass produce a cure.

[ logan scowls, dumping the thing down finally but still keeping one hand curled in a fist with claws pointed at him ] More like that was the bait. Wasn't it, bub? [ the creature squirms and doesn't answer, which is... enough of an answer in and of itself ]

Logan. [ it's impossible for abigail to be able to intimidate logan into compliance because, tbh, he scares her, but her tone has a hint of pleading in it. like maybe wait ten minutes before you murder him, please. (diplomacy 17) ] He might be able to help us find everything.

We certainly don't need to resort to needless bloodshed. [Diplomacy 21, this time directed at the guy.] I'm certain that our friend here can certainly learn the error of his ways. Right? Please help us. We can help you find a more... humane way to find food in the future.

[ he relents readily enough that it becomes clear that he wasn't... actually gonna do it, even if he wanted to. STILL WORKIN WITH THE GOOD GUYS, OK. or something. he retracts the claws, cracking his knuckles by flexing the fist. ] Now would be a good time for him to say he knows where to find the oldest tree in the forest. [ the creature sputters a bit, before shaking his head wildly: "I dun no nuffin' about no tree!" ]

[ abigail is momentarily distracted by watching logan's wounds clear up, but she shakes her head to clear her mind and focuses on the task at hand. ]

What about the dwarven ruins or Ulizmila, do you know anything about them?

[ "Dwarf home! Yes, yes, dwarf home in the mountains. Dark dwarves! Evil." ] I thought the dwarves were long gone. [ "They are, they are. Were evil! Most people don't know." ]

[ abigail squints at him, unsure whether she wants to believe him or not. (sense motive 26) ] But you know where they are? And you'll take us.

[ he sounds like he's telling the truth! "Can tell you! Don't make me go there," he sobs. logan rolls his eyes. ] We don't need to drag him along waiting for him to stab us in the back. 'Sides, the mountains are the furthest thing out, if that guy was right.

[ but but but cannon fodder. maybe it's for the best she doesn't say that out loud, tbh, instead seeming to shrug without actually moving her shoulders. ]

See if he can mark it on the map. If not, we should just get moving.

[ logan yanks out the map in clear irritation, as if this is a waste of time, and holds it out to the creature. ] Where?

[ it studies it with buggy eyes for a moment trying to make sense of it, before stabbing it with a nail at the base of the mountains. "Here, here." ]

[He pulls out a pen and makes a quick mark.]

You don't want to run into us again, understand?

[ "No, no! Will go far from here, yes!" it sputters, side-eying logan as it backs away towards the woods. logan curls his lip up in a snarl at it, and it yelps and runs off.

with a sigh, logan just starts pushing ahead, making his way around the riverbend, towards where they've been told the tree is.

the dense trees and thick brush of the forest eventually give way, parting seemingly in respect for the titanic darkwood tree that dominates the clearing. several times taller than a temple minaret, in one direction the obviously ancient tree reaches into the sky with branches like a giant's arms, while in the other, it plumbs the earth with roots thicker than a man's waist. its limbs broad and strong, its bark thick and so richly colored as to be almost black, and its leaves the size of bucklers, the giant thing is less a tree and more a cathedral of boughs and branches.

the clearing is roughly ovular, 180 feet from north to south, and 110 feet from west to east. the elder darkwood tree has a trunk 30 feet in diameter, with low branches that extend 35 feet from the trunk in every direction.

logan cranes his neck, looking up at the massive spectacle with no small degree of respect. ] ... Huh.

[grimrot]

Oh, how beautiful! [Grimrot gushes, wandering up to examine the gorgeous tree as she searches her memory to see if she knows anything about it (knowledge nature 21).] It's amazing this tree has survived long enough to get this large in this day and age.

[adamantiumed]

[ nothing too special, but she would know that the moss they need to collect from it usually grows higher up the trunk, so they'll probably have to climb. ] Especially next to a lumber town.

Makes you wonder if someone's protecting it...

[ abigail looks up at it like O_O. ] Or it's magic. [ she glances over at miles. ] You heard what that woman said. Superstition could have kept people away from it for all these years.

One way to find out. [ he ain't afraid of no magic. ejecting his claws, he stabs them into one side of the tree and then starts to fucking climb up using them (climb 27) ]

[ this seems like a horrible idea, but he's basically indestructible, so w/e. maybe he'll be fine. abigail watches anxiously, keepin' 'em peeled for anything out of the ordinary. (spot 16) ]

[ she doesn't see much, until logan makes his way up a ways, pushing some of the leaves off to the side with his bulk - and he sees something that stops him in his tracks, giving them a full view if they make a 14 spot check.

three corpses hang from the higher branches, flayed of almost all their flesh, equipment dangling from their half-devoured carcasses. ] ... Oh, for fuck's sake.

[ abigail gags at the sight, quickly turning away. why does she always get the disgusting body parts and flayed things??? she was supposed to have escaped this! after a brief moment to steal herself, she turns back and picks her way forward, looking up at logan unsteadily. ]

Can you cut one down?

[ gonna put this murder basement life to good use if it kills her. ]

[Miles cringes visibly. Worst. No thanks.

So he'll focus on something else, which is currently trying to make Abigail feel better. He goes to stand near her, placing a hand on her shoulder as if to make sure she's alright.

Maybe he just needs a little help keeping his shit together too, don't judge him.]
