[ All squires have to do their time assigned to desk duty once in awhile. They're required to monitor activity at the front gate, have guests sign in to a large, ancient looking yellowing tome, direct inquiries, disperse and record keys to company vehicles, etc. This job seen as a test of patience and responsibility. The job also entails fielding any phone calls made to the "Karthur Institute", the Knights' cover organization, and doing their best to discourage questioning (by putting people on hold eternally, accidentally hanging on them when transferring their call, answering questions as vaguely as possible, etc. etc.). Shifts at "the desk" are scheduled in eight hour blocks. Food is brought out to the desk by the kitchen staff.

Feel free to rp out your time on desk duty here... you never know who might show up. ]

[Yay, Lila's least favorite job... whatever, at least she gets to be rude to people on the phone for eight hours and so far she is on level 114 of candy crush so it is clearly a good use of her time.

Everytime the phone rings, her nose wrinkles and she pauses her game to pick it up, with a cheerful chirp.]

[Diana spends a lot of her time outdoors, although the dreary London weather isn’t anything like what she remembers from Massachusetts. Usually she’s propped up under one of the trees, flipping through the little book that she hasn’t let out of her sight, or something she’s borrowed from the library – usually a collection of fairytales, because training with Faye leaves her unsettled and kind of grumpy, generally.

Lately she’s been reading about apothecary gardens, and she’s discovered that although it’s possible, she’d really rather not use her magic to destroy things. Faye does well enough at that on her own, anyway. Three or four of the books are tucked away in her bedroom but she has one in her palm now, pressed up against her chest while she knocks on an overlarge wooden door.]

[Alainn hasn't been in the castle in so long that she's missed everything about it. Especially her favorite people, and yes that definitely includes Sir Lan!

Plus she jogs every morning, and it just so happens she loves to do that close to the woods surrounding the castle. Maybe it has something to do with her being a half-elf and being all nature-loving and stuff.

So she's out jogging, huff puffing along the wood-line.]

It's not that he has anythi -- okay, that's a lie, he has a lot of things against people, but his excuse for this past couple months is that he's sent them brooding over his inability to protect himself from magic and loss of free will and why oh why does his life suck.

But eventually he starts to become one with the world again. He shows up to the squiring events when they happen. He briefly contemplated going to the masquerade thing before deciding against it. Right now? He's wandering through the grounds. It may seem aimless, but if asked it's totally not. There is a method to us busying. He's just not going to tell you what it is.]

[Guess who’s walking around outside with a strange leather book in her pocket and a thin volume about gardening in one hand? Diana is! Being out of doors kind of helps with her ruffled emotions after time spent listening to Faye give her instructions, and she prefers reading beneath a tree to being hunched over in the library – so long as it’s not raining outside.

She’s not exactly expecting to find anyone else out here, so she practically runs into him in a spectacular reenactment of her squiring ceremony mishap (bal 6). Look, her brain is otherwise occupied and no one said she was particularly dexterous in the first place.] Oh! I’m sorry, I shouldn’t— [Have been walking around with your nose in a book instead of on your surroundings? Yeah.]

There’s not usually very many people out here; I guess I’ve gotten used to it.

[The pretty Moroi tends to spend the majority of her time indoors -- her skin is sensitive to the sun and the longer she spends out in it the more uncomfortable it makes her. But today she is out in the sun, kneeling in the grass and staining the hem of her white sundress. Her long platinum hair makes a curtain that obscures her face as she leans over -- but it doesn't hide the tiny, and dead, baby bird she is holding.

It was dead. Moments after she cradles it in her hands, it's broken little body starts to reshape itself as bones knit back together and wings straighten out, feathers regaining their glossy sheen. (Heal 27) Sometimes Lissa just doesn't have the willpower to stop herself.]

[ one of the perks of the knighthood is access to any of the vehicles in the garage that aren't people's private cars, etc. the public pool includes suvs, modern sedans, vans, limos, and several sleek sports cars - as well as a few motorcycles, and it's one of these that jaina solo spends long hours working on in the evenings: tearing it apart, putting it back together, in a grease stained tank top and jeans. it's possible that you might be alerted to her presence by some colorful, out-of-this-world cursing. ]

[ on the second floor is the very large, extensively stocked training room where many knights spend long hours honing their physical and combat skills. or... trying to.

those visiting the training room this week might be treated to the sight of aurelius' mentor putting him through the paces. and it's... a pretty sad sight. he clearly has no idea what he's doing, and looks terrified despite wearing lots of padding, as edain circles around him lazily twirling his sword. ]

Don't you think it's best I, er, practice with one of those dummies fir-- [ annd edain swings at him with ... a nat 20, meaning he is holding absolutely nothing back, and aurelius lets out a yowl, and... drops his short sword, spinning in hilarious circles as he winces at the pain of being struck across the padding ]

[ not all the 'training' in the combat room consists of mentors beating on their helpless squires. sometimes it consists of squires beating on helpless knights. see, for example, the colorful example of walking in the room to see sir eric carpenter lecturing sydney bristow on safety procedures for unarmed combat in the training room... only to have her abruptly flip and body slam him down onto the mat, keeping him down in a hold where his face is smashed hilariously to the floor. she says flatly, making it very clear that this is a statement on being babied: ] Did I do it right. [ he manages to mumble out a "... Yep, that's-- that's ... sort of what I was going for..." ]

[ an unusual hallway extends past the entrance dragon's fire wing, in that it doesn't go anywhere: it's merely home to a collection of portraits and statues of past great Knights, most long dead.

it's here that you might happen to run across one of the more elusive current Knights: Sir Max Rast, of the seventies hair-do and perma-leather jacket that looks like it's also... decades old. ]

[Lissa didn't mean to wind up here, actually, she is completely lost. But once she is lost, she finds herself looking at the portraits and statues and getting even more lost in those themselves. She's always liked art and history, she is a sucker for a museum, and she thinks she is used to portraits of the Moroi people, a distant memory of sitting for one as a little girl with the family she has no memory of. It's different though, realizing these people probably died for a cause. Like Guardians, but there was no hall to their memory...

She doesn't notice anyone else for a while, making a noise of surprise when she realizes she isn't alone.] Oh!

[ maybe you know faith, maybe you don't. that really won't stop her from very enthusiastically inviting anyone she sees in the hallway to meet at the downtown london headquarters that evening to go hit the clubs and/or pubs and 'have some adventures!'

so feel free to gather up in the lobby of the small hq, located in kensington gardens square. the main lobby area boasts an impressive silver dragon statue, about seven feet tall, immediately to the right of the entrance. the room is done in comforting wood and mahogany tones, and there's an array of tables and chairs across the room to the right, as well as a small piano. statues of King Arthur and Lancelot flank the hallway that continues straight beyond the lobby, and there's a staircase leading up, with wooden dragon-shaped banisters, immediately beyond the bathroom door to the right.

on the left are two doors, and one of them leads into a room which also has a small reception window open. between the doors hangs an ornate blue and silver tapestry with even more dragon imagery. it is an exercise in subtlety all around.

[In one of the rec rooms, a gangly ginger is playing the everloving fuck out of Mario Kart. Surprise though! He is actually comically good at it, like some kind of video game savant (computer use nat 20, what?), dodging koopa shells and banana peels and collecting speed boosts and item boxes like it is his calling in life.

Keep in mind the kid is from 1963 and hasn't held a Wii controller until this very day. Video games transcend time.

[It may have been a week since Lila's birthday but Rose was no closer to being over her anger at a certain six foot seven Russian and was perhaps making that extremely well known by the fact that she was back to sleeping in the ugly pink bedroom that had been allocated to her when she'd arrived in the castle.

It took forever for her to finally fall asleep and just when she thought she was in for a night of peace, her blackened vision began to shimmer as the lines between sleeping and waking blurred and her peaceful slumber melted with the dream-time arrival of an unexpected visitor.]

[Adrian looks almost surprised for a moment. Then he grins. They're standing in a beautiful, grassy area near a giant, shiny metal bean. If she explored Chicago much, she may recognize it as Millennium Park, though the real park is never this empty. Adrian strides towards her.]

[It takes only one look at the brunette pummeling the punching bag in front of her to get the approach at own risk vibe that's coming off of her in waves as hands that she hasn't bothered to wrap land blow after blow, causing the bag to swing wildly as she works out on her own.

She's been at this for some time now, as is evident by the pink splotches on her fists from the impact of knuckles against the heavy duty synthetic fabric and despite the heavy breathing and sheen of sweat that covers her body, she doesn't look like she's about to be stopping any time soon.]

[Charming spends a good chunk of his time in the training room ever since he's been back from his mission, trying to hone some skills to hopefully help out on his next one. He takes this knight thing really seriously. He wants to help and he's going to do whatever he can to make that happen.

He notices Rose some time after they've both started, and for the most part, he keeps his distance. She's definitely not here to socialize and he can respect that. But after awhile, he notices that she's not even slowing down. The last thing he needs is to find out that someone passed out from exhaustion or pulled something when he could have prevented it.

He walks up and positions himself behind the bag, holding onto it to give her a bit more resistance against her hits.]

Not that the room had changed at all, but he was taken aback by the sheer number of new squires and Knights who were in it. That didn't stop him from picking out a dummy and, after some warm up stretches, he takes out his ulak blades and begins attacking it.

[Taradiddle's not even a knight yet, but she doesn't really have anywhere else to go. She also hasn't made many friends yet, besides with whoever happens to be in the kitchens making food she can snag.

Which means for now, she's hanging out under a tree, humming softly to herself and making her own entertainment. In this case, the entertainment comes in the form of four lightly glowing spheres that are idly spinning and circling in random patterns.]

IN. THE. BOOK. it's like she thinks she's the half blood prince or smth. there are some other books scattered around her, which she probably ... has also written in.]

[Many knights (that aren't, say, Lan), after having been in the modern world for a few years, may have learned to adapt a bit more and start using modern technology and weapons. Those knights are clearly NOT Ser Jaime Lannister. He's still wearing his old, Westerosi Armor when he can, the weight a comforting familiarity in this strange new world, and still wielding his same old sword.

Luckily, he's at least adapted to showers and electric lights. Otherwise he'd be a great deal more smelly, considering all the time he puts into practicing. And riding horses.

It's a beautiful day today, so he's outside, practicing sword maneuvers against a particularly vicious-looking tree. But he'd certainly be happy to switch up his work-out routine with an actual person.]
